The final steps of Jesus (Part 8) “A Court Date for All”

“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred

confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life;

love illuminates it.”

Martin Luther King Jr.

This is the 240th letter:

Text for the day: Mark 15:1 New International Version

“Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.”

April is a special month to many around the world. It is our aim at Garden Ministry with your help to see that everyone on your email contact list if they will, receive these devotions in that month. The theme for the month will be, “Go light your world”. We can make it happen, by lighting your world.

Our Devotional

Have you ever been to a court room before? Why did you go there? Was it as an onlooker, a support to someone, or to be charged for breaking a law of your country? Isn’t it funny, that you very seldom hear of a person being tried for a crime that they did not commit. This is not to say that this doesn’t happen but only on the odd occasion. Today we take a look at Jesus being brought before a kangaroo court. Why is it that whenever people don’t like someone they try all in their power to cast judgment on them?

As the city of Jerusalem was sleeping, evil men where working to take the life of one who is life. Jesus said, “No one takes my life from me. I give my life of my own free will. I have the authority to give my life, and I have the authority to take my life back again. This is what my Father ordered me to do.” (John 10:18) “Under the Roman rule the Sanhedrin could not execute the sentence of death. They could only examine a prisoner, and pass judgment, to be ratified by the Roman authorities. It was therefore necessary to bring against Christ charges that would be regarded as criminal by the Romans.

An accusation must also be found which would condemn Him in the eyes of the Jews. Not a few among the priests and rulers had been convicted by Christ's teaching, and only fear of excommunication prevented them from confessing Him. The priests well remembered the question of Nicodemus, "Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?" John 7:51.”

This question had for a time broken up the council, and thwarted their plans. So on this night many of the leaders like Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus were summoned, but only those who would dare to speak in favor of justice to kill Jesus. It was the plan of the top Jewish leaders to unite the people against Christ, and this they did. The next time you see someone handled wrongly before the law, it is our duty to stand up for them. As the Jewish leaders where looking for an outward identification of the Messiah, people are looking for the same today. But because He gave them no outward show, they got mad and condemned Him to death, (Isaiah 53:7).

“When the condemnation of Jesus was pronounced by the judges, a satanic fury took possession of the people. The roar of voices was like that of wild beasts. The crowd made a rush toward Jesus, crying, He is guilty, put Him to death! Had it not been for the Roman soldiers, Jesus would not have lived to be nailed to the cross of Calvary. He would have been torn in pieces before His judges, had not Roman authority interfered, and by force of arms restrained the violence of the mob.

Most time’s when church people do harm to another brother in the church; God allows those who are not serving Him to see what is happening. As they behold with anger, the brutal treatment of one against whom nothing had been proven. They long to step in and do something, but they wait for a better opportunity, and in the waiting God brings salvation to their house. At the court room where they tried Jesus, the Priests and rulers forgot the dignity of their office, and abused the Son of God with foulest profanity. They taunted Him with His parentage. They declared that His presumption in proclaiming Himself the Messiah made Him deserving of the most ignominious death.

Someone once said, “From the deepest desires often comes the deadliest hate.” An old garment was thrown over His head, and His persecutors struck Him in the face, saying, "Prophesy unto us, Thou Christ, Who is he that smote Thee?" (Matthew 26:57-75 /Luke 22:64) They did everything imaginable in their crime, but they did not take into account that the angels of God, where faithfully recording every insulting look, word, and act against their beloved Commander. One day every man who is scorned, abused, lied, and spat upon by someone will have their day before God, (Galatians 6:7). Remember, “One drop of hatred left in the cup of joy turns the most blissful draught into poison.” By Johann Friedrich Von Schiller

So don’t be weary child of God in well doing; for you shall reap, if you faint not. (Galatians 6:9)

Today’s devotion is based on, “The Desire of Ages” chapter 75.

Please join us, along with our partners at Amnesty International and the NAACP, in asking the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole to save Troy Davis' life by commuting his sentence to life in prison. And when you do, please ask your friends and family to do the same. Though there's major evidence that Davis didn't commit the crime, Georgia is prepared to put him to death. We have a good chance of stopping this -- but only if we speak up now.

The fact is, no physical evidence connected Davis to the murder. Seven of the original nine witnesses have recanted, with many saying their testimony was a result of law enforcement pressure. Of the remaining witnesses, one is highly suspect and the other could be the actual culprit in the officer's murder.

Now, despite these and other facts, the state of Georgia has taken the first steps toward Davis' execution -- and only the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole stands between Davis and the lethal injection chamber.

Georgia may be about to kill an innocent man. That's not justice. Please ask the Georgia Parole Board to spare Troy Davis' life, before it's too late -- and it's critical that you ask others to do the same:
