O MAGNIFY THE LORD WITH ME


Today, I am taking a moment to give thanks to GOD for His blessings and mercies to my family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Although every day is not “Thanksgiving”, we can still give thanks, to God, every day. One American, famous scholar, educator, and religious leader Neal A. Maxwell once said, “We should certainly count our blessings, but we should also make our blessings count.”

In speaking about giving thanks, the Apostle Paul said under inspiration, “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:20.


The subject of gratitude is seen throughout the Bible. But what is gratitude? It is said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all others.” Cicero.

All of us must admit, most times, that it is more natural to be entitled and selfish than grateful and humble.

This is why we must ask God to help us cultivate the spirit of gratitude.


Here are six habits of gratitude that will help us cultivate gratitude to God.  By Mark Cole - Cultivating Gratitude.

1. “Put people first

Putting others first has a way of shifting our priorities, and putting things back into proper perspective.

2. Appreciate timing

Life is a journey, not a destination, so appreciate where you are. Solomon wrote, “There is a time for every purpose under heaven.”

3. Develop the habit of giving

Nothing loosens a person’s grip on the spirit of selfishness like giving things away. It purifies motives and lightens the heart.

4. Learn to enjoy things without ownership

The more things you can enjoy without having to control or own them, the lighter (the) things will have on you.

5. Express gratitude for your blessings

If we are honest with ourselves, we will admit that we don’t deserve any of the things God has given us. Consider this reminder from the book of James, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17). When you recognize that what you have is a gift, to begin with, it’s easier to give it up or give it away.

6. Maintain an eternal perspective”

“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” Epicurus.


THE position of our text in the epistle today is worthy of our observation. It follows the precept concerning sacred song, in which believers bid to speak to themselves and one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in their hearts to the Lord. If they cannot always find a song to sing, they should ask God to help them always maintain a song in their heart in every circumstance.


This is the day to give thanks! Psalms 34:3 says, “O magnify the LORD with me and let us exalt his name together.” 

As you go through your day today, take the three take times with you. 

1. Take time, to thank God for all His blessings in your life this year. 

2. Take time, to invite others to join you, as you thank God for His goodness, mercy, and truth to all generations. 

3. Take time, to thank God for His goodness and mercy to us in good times and bad times. For someone bigger than you and I is in control, and that someone is the Almighty God!

LET US WELCOME THE PRODIGALS AND STOP JUDGING THEM*

 


Today, there are more exchristains living on the outside of the church, then walking the corridors of the church buildings. Some go to church and are asked to do nothing. Others go to church on special occasions, and don't go back until the next invitation. Still, others haven't been to a church in years. 


To the majority, members of churches see them and greet them as if they do not exist. In fact, some members even go as far as to say to their church boards, "Don't ask that person to do anything because they are not interested. 


The cycle continues year after year with a lack of interest in those who once were christians or walked in their denominations as members or church leaders. 



As time goes on, God uses these people who are the outcasts in great positions of trust to their country. Yet, they are still despised and rejected. 


Eventually, the spirit of the Lord moves upon these outcasts to seek ways of how they can better help the Christian church move from strength to strength. But they are still despised and rejected.


As time goes on, other churches call on them and use them to the fullest. But they are still despised and rejected by those of whom they once walked with. 


All these outcasts and rejected former sons and daughters of God, desire is to do, the work of building up the kingdom of God without any prejudiceness. 


As time goes on, the leading of God's hand upon their lives is fully seen by all. Without any question, it is seen that God is using them in a mighty way to bring back the tide of those who once walked in the fullness of his love.


I am reminded by a quotation of what it means to be kind and loving to all who visit the church. "If we would humble ourselves before God and be kind and courteous and tenderhearted and pitiful, there would be one hundred conversions to the truth where now there is only one."


The next time you point your finger at a former church member or who was in a prominent position in the church or community. See that your finger points them to the table of love and kindness without prejudicesness, beginning with you. "And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." Ephesians 4:32.

The call of David, An Object Lesson in Waiting


I read a story about scientists who did an experiment with four-year-old children and marshmallows. It is said, "Each child was told by a scientist that they could have a marshmallow; however, if the child waited until the scientist returned from an errand, they would be given two. Some of the children stuffed the marshmallow into their mouths the moment the scientist left; others waited. The differences were noted.

The scientists then kept track of these children into their teenage years. The ones who had waited turned out to be better adjusted, better students, and more confident than those who didn't. It seemed that patience was indicative of something greater, something important in the human character. No wonder, then, we're told to cultivate it by the Lord."

Why do we sometimes have to wait so long for things? What lessons can we learn about patience while in the crucible?  

Waiting is painful by definition. Learning patience is not easy; sometimes it's the very essence of what it means to be in the crucible.


While we wait, we can concentrate on one of two things. We can focus on the things that we are waiting for, or we can focus on the One who holds those things in His hands. What makes such a difference when we wait for something isn't so much how long we have to wait, as it is our attitude while we wait. If we trust the Lord, we place our lives in His hands. If we surrender our will to Him, then we can trust that He will do what's best for us when it's best for us, no matter how hard it is sometimes to wait.

Six important spiritual lessons in waiting. 

1. Waiting can refocus our attention away from "things" and back to God Himself. 

2. Waiting allows us to develop a clearer picture of our own motives and desires. 

3. Waiting builds perseverance—spiritual stamina. 

4. Waiting opens the door to developing many spiritual strengths, such as faith and trust. 

5. Waiting allows God to put down other pieces in the bigger picture of the puzzle. 

6. We may never know why we must wait in this life; hence, we learn to live and walk by faith.


When you read 1 Samuel 16:1-13. One must closely look at verses 10 to 13 which reads.

16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”

The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’

3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”

4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”

5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 

9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 

10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 

11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David."


A few miles south of Jerusalem, “the city of the great King,” is Bethlehem, where David, the son of Jesse, was born more than a thousand years before the infant Jesus was cradled in the manger and worshiped by the Wise Men from the East. Centuries before the advent of the Saviour, David, in the freshness of boyhood, kept watch of his flocks as they grazed on the hills surrounding Bethlehem. The simple shepherd boy sang the songs of his own composing, and the music of his harp made a sweet accompaniment to the melody of his fresh young voice. The Lord had chosen David, and was preparing him, in his solitary life with his flocks, for the work He designed to commit to his trust in after years.

While David was thus living in the retirement of his humble shepherd's life, the Lord God was speaking about him to the prophet Samuel. “And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided Me a king among his sons.... Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord. And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto Me him whom I name unto thee. And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.” The elders accepted an invitation to the sacrifice, and Samuel called also Jesse and his sons. The altar was built and the sacrifice was ready. All the household of Jesse were present, with the exception of David, the youngest son, who had been left to guard the sheep, for it was not safe to leave the flocks unprotected.

When the sacrifice was ended, and before partaking of the offering feast, Samuel began his prophetic inspection of the noble-appearing sons of Jesse. Eliab was the eldest, and more nearly resembled Saul for stature and beauty than the others. His comely features and finely developed form attracted the attention of the prophet. As Samuel looked upon his princely bearing, he thought, “This is indeed the man whom God has chosen as successor to Saul,” and he waited for the divine sanction that he might anoint him. But Jehovah did not look upon the outward appearance. Eliab did not fear the Lord. Had he been called to the throne, he would have been a proud, exacting ruler. The Lord's word to Samuel was, “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” No outward beauty can recommend the soul to God. The wisdom and excellence revealed in the character and deportment, express the true beauty of the man; and it is the inner worth, the excellency of the heart, that determines our acceptance with the Lord of hosts. How deeply should we feel this truth in the judgment of ourselves and others? We may learn from the mistake of Samuel how vain is the estimation that rests on beauty of face or nobility of stature. We may see how incapable is man's wisdom of understanding the secrets of the heart or of comprehending the counsels of God without special enlightenment from heaven. The thoughts and ways of God in relation to His creatures are above our finite minds; but we may be assured that His children will be brought to fill the very place for which they are qualified, and will be enabled to accomplish the very work committed to their hands, if they will but submit their will to God, that His beneficent plans may not be frustrated by the perversity of man.

Eliab passed from the inspection of Samuel, and the six brothers who were in attendance at the service followed in succession to be observed by the prophet; but the Lord did not signify His choice of any one of them. With painful suspense Samuel had looked upon the last of the young men; the prophet was perplexed and bewildered. He inquired of Jesse, “Are here all thy children?” The father answered, “There remaineth yet the youngest, and behold, he keepeth the sheep.” Samuel directed that he should be summoned, saying, “We will not sit down till he come hither.


The lonely shepherd was startled by the unexpected call of the messenger, who announced that the prophet had come to Bethlehem and had sent for him. With surprise he questioned why the prophet and judge of Israel should desire to see him; but without delay he obeyed the call. “Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to.” As Samuel beheld with pleasure the handsome, manly, modest shepherd boy, the voice of the Lord spoke to the prophet, saying, “Arise, anoint him: for this is he.” David had proved himself brave and faithful in the humble office of a shepherd, and now God had chosen him to be captain of His people. “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of [from among] his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.” The prophet had accomplished his appointed work, and with a relieved heart, he returned to Ramah.

Samuel had not made known his errand, even to the family of Jesse, and the ceremony of anointing David had been performed in secret. It was an intimation to the youth of the high destiny awaiting him, that amid all the varied experiences and perils of his coming years, this knowledge might inspire him to be true to the purpose of God to be accomplished by his life.

The great honor conferred upon David did not serve to elate him. Notwithstanding the high position which he was to occupy, he quietly continued his employment, content to await the development of the Lord's plans in His own time and way. As humble and modest as before his anointing, the shepherd boy returned to the hills and watched and guarded his flocks as tenderly as ever. But with new inspiration, he composed his melodies and played upon his harp.

Who can measure the results of those years of toil and wandering among the lonely hills? The communion with nature and with God, the care of his flocks, the perils and deliverances, the griefs and joys, of his lowly lot, were not only to mold the character of David and to influence his future life, but through the psalms of Israel's sweet singer they were in all coming ages to kindle love and faith in the hearts of God's people, bringing them nearer to the ever-loving heart of Him in whom all His creatures live.


A few lessons from the call of David.

1. The Lord had chosen David, and prepared him, in his solitary life with his flocks, for the work He designed to commit to his trust in after years.

3. Jesse's sons were prophetically inspected by Samuel.

12. Before God sets His servants apart for service openly, He always anoints them for service privately.


13. "The elder brothers, from whom Samuel would have chosen, did not possess the qualifications that God saw to be essential in a ruler of His people. Proud, self-centered, self-confident, they were set aside for the one whom they lightly regarded, one who had preserved the simplicity and sincerity of his youth, and who, while little in his own sight, could be trained by God for the responsibilities of the kingdom. So today, in many a child whom the parents would pass by, or (spiritual and civic leaders have over looked) God sees capabilities far above those revealed by others who are thought to possess great promise. And as regards life's possibilities, who is capable of deciding what is great and what is small? How many a worker in the lowly places of life, by setting on foot agencies for the blessing of the world, has achieved results that kings might envy!" Education, 266.


"God does not accept men because of their capabilities, but because they seek His face, desiring His help. God sees not as man sees. He judges not from appearances. He searches the heart, and judges righteously. “To this man will I look,” He declares, “even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word” (Isaiah 66:2).

He accepts and communes with His lowly, unpretentious followers; for in them He sees the most precious material, which will stand the test of storm and tempest, heat and pressure.

Our object in working for the Master should be that His name may be glorified in the conversion of sinners. Those who labor to gain applause are not approved of God.

The Lord uses many gifts in the work of saving sinners. In the future, common men will be impressed by the Spirit of God to leave their ordinary employment to go forth and proclaim the last message of mercy. They are to be strengthened and encouraged, and as fast as possible prepared for labor, that success may crown their efforts. They cooperate with unseen, heavenly agencies, for they are willing to spend and be spent in the service of the Master. They are laborers together with God, and their brethren should bid them Godspeed, praying for them as they go forth to fulfill the great commission. No one is authorized to hinder such workers. They are to be treated with the greatest respect. No taunting word is to be spoken of them as in the rough places of the earth they sow the gospel seed." The Review and Herald, July 4, 1907.

GROW IN GRACE

 

In life, for us to grow in grace in all things, we must be willing to put away self. The question was asked by them of old, "How is it possible that we may grow in grace? It is possible to us only as we empty our hearts of self, and present them to God, to be molded after the Divine Pattern. We may have a connection with the living channel of light; we may be refreshed with the heavenly dew, and have the showers of heaven descend upon us. As we appropriate the blessing of God, we shall be able to receive greater measures of His grace." 

Today, many are longing to grow in grace; they pray over the matter and are surprised that their prayers are not answered. The Master has given them a work to do whereby they shall grow. Yet, of what value is it to pray when there is a need of work? The question is, "Are they seeking to save souls for whom Christ died? Spiritual growth depends upon giving to others the light that God has given to you. You are to put forth your best thoughts in active labor to do good, and only good, in your family, in your church, and in your neighborhood."


When one puts self aside, life takes on a new meaning in all things. At home, at work, and even in the community. In place of growing anxious with the thought that you are not growing in grace, just doing every day duties that presents itself, become a joy in Lord. Your burdens of soul the comes your way, opens a new pathway to help save the lost. Today let us put self aside, and be kind, be courteous, be pitiful; speak in humility of the blessed hope; talk of the love of God; tell of His goodness, His mercy, and His righteousness; and cease to worry as to whether or not you are growing. In the garden, plants do not grow through any conscious effort.... The plant is not in continual worriment about its growth; it just grows under the supervision of the gardener. 


So, what does it mean to grow in grace? Growing in grace means, we are to add to faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity. You are not to think that you must wait until you have perfected one grace before cultivating another. No; you are to allow yoir gifts to grow up together, fed continually from the fountain of charity; every day that you live, you can be perfecting the blessed attributes fully revealed in the character of Christ; and when you do this, you will bring light, love, peace, and joy into your homes. 


The Bible speaking on this subject says, "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings." Philippians 2:12, 13. 


Until Jesus comes back the second time, we will all have to face temptation. Yet, "Temptation must be met and resisted. Day by day the spiritual battle goes on. Day by day we are to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. It is God that works in us, to will and to do of His good pleasure. Every soul is to strive with “all diligence” to add constantly to his spiritual attainments, strengthening every grace, increasing in efficiency that he may grow in usefulness and holiness, as a fruit-bearing tree in the Lord's garden. He is to be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. True religion leads to the cultivation of the gifts that make a man more precious in God's sight than the gold of Ophir."


"It is by communion with Him, daily, hourly—by abiding in Him—that we are to grow in grace. He is not only the Author, but the Finisher of our faith. It is Christ first and last and always. He is to be with us, not only at the beginning and the end of our course, but at every step of the way”


As you go through this day, remember, "If we would develop a character which God can accept, we must always form correct habits in our religious life after His will." My prayer today is, "LORD, help us grow in your grace, and understand that nothing happens without your permission and will. Because you are always in control."
