Garden Ministry

Encouraging workers in the field of the Lord.

(Weathering the storms of life)

Silver and gold are tested by flames of fire; but our characters are tested by the LORD.

This is the 209th letter:

Text for the day: 2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Our Theme for the day: (Weathering the storms of life)

Our Devotional

Mark McLaughlin is a published author who has written five books and some say he has more than 500 articles in print also. Mark teaches Sierra Nevada pioneer history firsthand, using entertaining stories, unique slide shows and informative field trips. He is a frequent guest on regional television, documentaries and PBS programs, and has appeared on The History Channel and The Weather Channel. During the pass 30 years Mark has lived in the Sierra Nevada and has seen how nature can quickly change. In one of his books called, “Weathering the Storm” he shares the story of an old western tale of the struggle for survival.

He goes on to say in his book of how a powerful snowstorm slammed into eighty- one travelers’ during the winter of 1847, trapping these California-bound pioneers high in the Sierra. In the days that will follow, these eighty–one people would go through extreme weather challenging the emigrants and their heroic rescuers. We all have extreme challenges in our lives at times, it’s not the challenges that we should focus on, but the lesson God is trying to teach us.

Friends, when all is done in are quest for glory on this earth, “It is only character that will help us weather the storms of life and keep us from sinning. (Proverbs 10:9).

Be not deceived, it is the Lord’s purpose that we develop good characters within us, and he brings this about through trials. (
1 Peter 1:7) The Bible says, “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart” (Proverbs 17:3). Godly character is the result of the Holy Spirit’s work of sanctification. Character in the believer is a consistent manifestation of Jesus in his life. It is the purity of heart that God gives becoming purity in action. Let us restate this fact. God sometimes uses trials to strengthen character: “we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4). The Lord is pleased when His children grow in character. “You test the heart and are pleased with integrity” (1 Chronicles 29:17; see also Psalm 15:1-2).

We can develop character by:

1.    Controlling our thoughts (Philippians 4:8)

2.    Practicing Christian virtues (2 Peter 1:5-6)

3.    Guarding our hearts (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 15:18-20)

4.    By keeping good company (1 Corinthians 15:33)

Finally, men and women of character will set a good example for others to follow, and their godly reputation will be evident to all (Titus 2:7-8). Let us face our extreme challenges with confidence, knowing that God will bring us through.
