“You are who you are and what you are because of the dominating thoughts that occupy your mind”
By Donal Smith
This is the 207th letter:
Text for the day: Philippians 2:5
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
Our Theme for the day: (THE INNER-MAN)
Our Devotional
The last time we looked at the benefit of a good character. We said in part one that a noble character is more precious than worldly possessions. Today we shall focus on the law of the mind and character building. The world is filled with people who had exemplary characters, and not all of them served in areas of trust. Some served their community as maids, barbers, masons, housewives, and gardeners the ordinary person. Like those who served their communities in areas of trust, they were best known for their good characters. All of these people’s noble characters began in the mind.
The law of the human mind is that by beholding, “we become changed.” The old timers would say repetition straightens the impression. In other words if you look at something long enough, or listen to something over and over again you will be changed by it. On the road to building a noble character, all must see that they will rise no higher than their conceptions of truth, purity, and holiness. If the mind is not exalted above the level of humanity and the flesh, it will seek for its level the standards of the world. Saying it another way. “If the mind is not uplifted by faith to contemplate the infinite wisdom and love of God, it will sink lower and lower into the demoralizing pit sin.”
If a noble character begins in the mind, shall we depend on Human reasoning to give us better judgment over evil? No! Human reasoning isn't enough to discern spiritual good from evil. The Bible encourages us to have the "mind of Christ". "Let this mind be in you," wrote Paul, "which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5). Though He was God, yet He condescended to become man. He forsook the grandeur of heaven for earthly servitude. This first took place in His mind!!! He sacrificed the glory of heavenly existence for an ill-fated career as the slave of God. And He did that for you and me. Eventually He was exalted to heaven once more, enhanced as Lord of all because He first was willing to become the servant of all. Have this attitude in yourselves.
This heavenly and godly mindset will direct the choices and actions, because thoughts and feelings make character. Finally, when Adam was in Eden before sin, he had communion with God and angels, but his character wasn’t fully developed. It was only through trial and tests that God planed for his character to be fully made perfect. After Adam fell in his mind first, then his actions followed to commit sin with Eve, which led to their death. But God did not leave him there. He opened a door through the death of the lamb, and today that door still is open to who so ever will they may come. Like the song says, “He who began a good work in you, will be faithful to complete it in you. (Philippians 1:6)
