Garden Ministry

Encouraging workers in the field of the Lord.

Faith or Foolishness (Part 9) “He’s been Faithful” (This is the final in the series)

I do not pray for success, I ask for faithfulness.

By the late Mother Teresa

This is the 225th letter:

Text for the day: Genesis 18:19 (King James Version)

For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

April is a special month to many around the world. It is our aim at Garden Ministry with your help to see that everyone on your email contact list if they will, receive these devotions in that month. Have you ever been out to a flower garden lately? Tell me, what type of plants first catches your eye? Is it the bright colored ones or the not so bright ones? Do you take time to know the names of the types of flowers in a garden? What about designing a flower garden, do you understand the first step one must take, in deciding what types of plants are needed for the space you prefer? These questions can also apply to a vegetable, herb, rose, fruit, or indoor garden.

When you are looking for the best plant, remember some plants can be annuals, biennials or perennials, meaning that they live for one year, two years or more. Planting annuals means that you can redesign your garden each year. On the other hand, planting perennials gives you some recurring elements to work with. You may wish to combine annuals and perennials, dividing them up into various beds. This way, you reduce the yearly expenses and labor of planting annuals while permitting yourself some variation from year to year.

Planting with a theme can be fun in gardening. This could be like planting flowers with aromatic blossoms which make for a sweet-smelling sanctuary. If you like to enjoy watching butterflies, then you select species that attract the winged pollinators. But if you like indoor gardening, you choose species that fare well in these conditions. The life of Abraham is like a garden with many colors that filled with wonderful lessons of faith. It doesn’t matter from what area you look at him, there is always a theme. Just take some time to read your bible and you would see, “The day man talked with angels”, or “The saving of three and the destruction of two wicked cites” (Genesis 18/ Genesis 19).

There are many more lessons that we can learn from the life of Abraham. Like, “The day Abraham met his greatest test and how we will meet ours too”, (Genesis 22:1-24). Our future outline will take us through these and many other accounts in the word of God about the faithfulness of Abraham. If time permit, we could have looked at, “A day of sadness, when death came a knocking,” (Genesis 23:1-20); “The day our family had grown,” (Genesis 24:1-67); and “You are apart of my family,” (Genesis 25:1-18).

Abraham was a family man and loved everyone associated with his family. Like a garden with beautiful plants, he enjoyed the people he met in the way, and those who lived with him and visited his home. Abraham understood true love. True love is a high and holy principle not awakened by the impulse of the heart which suddenly dies when brought to it severest test. But by the faithfulness to duty true love is manifest. From the day of his calling, Abraham learned lessons of self-denial, kindness, courtesy, and Christian sympathy. Thus love kept him when he would have failed, and happiness became his companion when his heart was broken.

Like Abraham, you are called also by God to minister. May you find your calling in Him today. Remember the Abrahamic life is an example to all who would live by faith, “Full of love and the benevolence of heaven”. Where by the Lord said, “I know him, that he will command his children and his household after me, and they shall keep my ways, to do justice and judgment; that I may bring upon Abraham that which I have spoken of him. May the Lord grant to you, the same blessing!

This is the 224th letter:

Text for the day: Galatians 3:27-29 (King James Version)

For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

In awe, the preacher fell upon his face, as he reached out to God. This was not the first time and it would definitely not be the last. After many years of silence whether God would ever reveal Himself again, the day had come and in reverential awe he poured out his heart to Him. This attitude in worship was common in ancient times, as one would lie and cry out to the Lord with all their heart (Genesis 17:17; Genesis 24:52; Numbers 16:22; Mark14:35).

As God talked with Abram He reminded him of His covenant that was with him and that he would be the father of many nations. (Genesis 17:3-4) Now God in an outward showing of the fulfillment of His covenant to Abram said, “Your name shall no longer be called Abram, but Abraham". On that day Abram became the first of several persons whose name God changed. Abram was not the only one who would receive a change of name that day. But his wife would also receive a new name. Abrams new name, Abraham, signifies, "father of a great multitude,” and Sarai’s name became Sarah signifying "princess" or a "mother of nations" (Genesis 17:15-16).

As an outward showing on Abrahams part, that he accepted God’s blessing, he was asked to circumcise himself and all the males in his family eight days old and older (Genesis 17:9-14). This rite on the part of Abraham and his household stood as a seal of the righteousness of his faith in God (Romans 4:11). It was to be observed by the patriarch and his descendants as a token, that they were devoted to the service of God and thus separated from idolaters, and that God accepted them as His peculiar treasure. By this rite, they were also pledging that they would not contract marriages with those who did not worship God and follow His holy command.

In view of the importance people attach to names, God changed the names of certain men to make them harmonize with their experiences in Him. Remember, the terms and benefits of the covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants are to every Christian today. But instead of the circumcision of the foreskin as a token of the covenant, God is calling for the circumcision of the heart. (Galatians 3:16; Acts 2:30; Galatians 3:29; Acts 16:31)

The late John F. Kennedy said, “Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." Like Abram there may be someone who is longing for a new experience or change in the Lord. But first like Abram, God needs to start with the change of your name. What is your name today, a worship of other gods and idols? What is your name, a user of Gods name in vain? What is your name, Sabbath breaker, or dishonored child to your parent and those in authority?

What is your name, murder, adulterer, or thief? What is your name, liar, or covenant minded person? Today it doesn’t matter what your name is, it could be changed. If your name is sinner it could be change to saint. If your name is lost, you can have your name changed to found. Lastly, if your name is damned, it could be changed to redeem. No matter what your name is today; you can say Lord, change my name.
