Our Devotional

If you have been following us in our series, by this time if you stay in a country where you can do some gardening it would be good to put these facts to practice. Step four of our series of “Wealthy, Healthy, and Wise” is the part that most gardeners run from. Not that there’s anything wrong with this step as so much what it calls forth from you the gardener. Step four is maintenance. Little do people realize but planting a garden on time is only part of the battle. From the day your garden is planted with seeds or seedling, it will require maintenance to keep your garden blooming and looking good all the planting season. Putting it another way, planting a garden is only the beginning. Keeping your garden growing and thriving is what makes you a gardener. In the garden there are certain plants that need more maintenance than others. Vegetables are in most cases low maintenance plants if sown properly. If in anything vegetables need to be molded every ten to fourteen days and watch for the worms. But when it comes to the flower garden, it requires constant maintenance to help it look their best. Common garden chores like pruning, pinching and deadheading are easy to master they all help the flower garden to always look good. Mulch is any type of material is also good for the plants in the garden.

Just spread or laid over the surface of the soil as a covering, it will retain moisture in the soil, suppress weeds and keep the soil cool. But use organic mulch; it helps improve the soil’s fertility, as they decompose. Maintenance not just applied to the care of the garden and the plants in the garden, but the tools. Proper maintenance will ensure that your garden tools last a lifetime so you can have the best garden and garden care. What are the three main points of gardening? Care of the garden, care of the plants, and the care of the tools. These three points can also be applied to the work of the servant leader. As servant leaders God has called you to improve upon the place He has sent you to serve, that is your garden. It could be a classroom, a courtroom, a hospital, or even a church. Where ever you are called to serve, you should not rest until you have done your best to make it a better place for all. Number two of the garden is the care of the plants. This is the main reason why God has called you as servant leaders. Some servant leaders seem to have forgotten this side of ministry. Warrant officer class two of the Bermuda Regiment Sergeant Major Chauncey P. Durham, EM says it this way on the back of all his cards. Love people - not things, use things - not people. In this 21st century many people have forgotten this.

This may be one of the leading factors in our youth problems around the world. We have trained them to love things by given them things every time they cried from babies. That now they are youth; all they love and respect is things and not people. What we as servant leaders need to know is this, people don’t care how much you know until they see how much you care. “Stop sitting around and eating up the fat and get out in your own garden or calling in Christ Jesus and take care of the business before you.” Garden maintenance is also like the campaign program in a church, or campaign program in a campaign. They all straighten the listener toward the harvest, and after care. It is the personal touch of service. Today you can bring joy to your place of calling if you will only get out and serve. Number three, is the part that everyone feels we can waste, the care of the tools. It is clear we all know we live in a technological advance society. But this does not give us right to become consumers. We spend great money on tools for service to keep up with the latest information with little results. It’s time to put our brakes on and learn how to maximize the things we have, as our parents did and were happy.  I’m not saying we should not advance in technology persuades but only as needed. Remember Garden maintenance prevents your garden from becoming an overgrown area plagued by weeds, and allow sun to penetrate for good growth. Get out and do it today.
