Our Devotional
As I was reading one day I came across this statement. “In his teaching, Christ called the attention of his hearers to the things of nature, the work of his own hands. He made the trees, the grass, and the flowers that they might teach us precious lessons.” As my wife and I walk around our yard and talk about the beautiful things we see, we can’t help but say how great thou art. As one looks carefully at our first parents in
Now let’s look at the question of what is a seed made up of? Seeds come in different sizes, shapes, and colors. Some can be eaten and some can't. Some seeds germinate easily while other seed need certain conditions to be met before they will germinate. With in every seed there is a tiny part called the embryo. The outer covering of a seed is called the seed coat. Seed coats help protect the embryo from injury and also from drying out. Seed coats can be thin and soft as in beans or thick and hard as in locust or coconut seeds. Endosperm, a temporary food supply, is packed around the embryo in the form of special leaves called cotyledons or seed leaves. These generally are the first parts visible when the seed germinates. Seeds remain dormant or inactive until conditions are right for germination. All seeds need water, oxygen, and proper temperature in order to germinate. Some seeds require proper light also. Some germinate better in full light while others require darkness to germinate.
When a seed is exposed to the proper conditions, water and oxygen are taken in through the seed coat. The embryo's cells start to enlarge. Then the seed coat breaks open and a root or radical emerges first, followed by the shoot or plumule that contains the leaves and stem. Many things can cause poor germination. Over watering causes the plant to not have enough oxygen. Planting seeds too deeply causes them to use all of their stored energy before reaching the soil surface. Dry conditions mean the plant doesn't have enough moisture to start the germination process and keep it going. Some seed coats are so hard that water and oxygen cannot get through until the coat breaks down.
Soaking or scratching the seeds will help break down the seed coat. Morning glories and locust seeds are examples. Other seeds need to be exposed to proper temperatures. Apple seeds will not germinate unless they are held at cold temperatures for a period of time. Christ seeks to lead the mind from the natural seed cast into the ground to the gospel seed, the proper sowing of which will result in bringing man back to his loyalty, relationship and image in God. The Saviour came to this world to sow the seed of truth, and He has given to every Servant leader to do the same. Like a sower in the field, he scattered the seeds of truth in the hearts of men. All who receive the word into an honest heart will bring forth fruit. In their hearts will spring up the precious fruits of the Spirit,--love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. As servant leaders we need more of the power of the Holy-Spirit that we may meet all men where they are. Like a seed that has a coat to protect it, we must become water and oxygen and a proper temperature around them in order to see them germinate. Remember some seeds require proper light also. This is likening to special classes of one on one, or seminars. Today as you minister, may God grant to you added strength to sow His seed in the morning, in the noon-tide, and the dewy eve. But most of all may He grant you the knowledge to sow with kindness.

Seeds in all shapes
