Consider this: The Lord's Prayer contains 56 words; the Gettysburg Address, 266; the Ten Commandments, 297; the Declaration of Independence, 300; and a U.S. government order setting the price of cabbage, 26,911 words. It's not how long we talk; it's what we say that is so important. He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity, Proverbs 21:23.
This is the 265th letter:
Text for the day: Proverbs 12:22
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.
Our Theme for the day is: (I’LL GIVE YOU POWER) Part 7 Speak truthfully one to another
Our Devotional
“Someone has appropriately written; Soft words sung in a lullaby will put a babe to sleep. Excited words will stir a mob to violence. Eloquent words will send armies marching into the face of death. Encouraging words will fan to flame the genius of a Rembrandt or a Lincoln. Powerful words will mold the public mind as the sculptor molds his clay.” Added to this we can say like Peter under the power of the Holy Spirit, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech." (1 Peter 3:10)
Words, spoken or written, are a dynamic force. When Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit, the Bible says that as a result, they lost their life and the life that is to come. Through this stern punishment, God wanted all to know and to learn how deep is His hatred and contempt toward all who practice hypocrisy, deception, and lying, Acts 5:1-11. Have you not noticed lately, that people are willing to try anything to deceive the authorities?
A questionnaire was handed out to the readers of Answerbag, asking a few questions of which one of the questions was, “Why do people deceive others?” The answer by most people was, “Sadly it is a human function, and most people who deceive are very miserable people, and don't care who they hurt.” Another answer was, “Because they are selfish.” Then an unusual answer came in that caused everyone to sit up, “Because they are cowards. Give me the truth straight up please". If God dislikes deceiving and it has never been a part of His nature, it will be safe to say that it is a part of another source on earth fighting for power and worship. In the days of Jesus when the leaders where trying to trap Him, He said that they were like their father the Devil, John 8:44.
Everyone needs to know that lying is one of the tools of the devil that is going to keep many people out of Heaven. If you deceive people, then at that point you take the side of Satan, and these are usually people who are too WEAK to handle the truth. Fortunately, what comes around goes around, that is, deception will cause delusion. But those who practice speaking truth will see God and see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living, Psalm 27:13. As God punished this couple, He will punish and condemn all falsehood. Lying lips are an abomination to Him, proverbs 12:22.
In the city of God made new, there is one thing that we hear so frequent on earth that will not be there. He declares that into the Holy City "there shall in no wise enter . . . anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, nor maketh a lie." Revelation 21:27. Let truth telling be held with no loose hand or uncertain grasp. Let it become a part of your life. Playing fast and loose with truth, and dissembling it to suit one's own selfish plans, means a shipwreck of your faith. We must master the art of standing, even when others around us are lying, we must stand, Ephesians 6:14.
If you are one who utters untruths, stop, because you are selling your soul in a cheap market. In the case of Ananias and Sapphira, the sin of fraud against God was speedily punished. Thus, through history this sin has often been repeated, and is committed by many in our time. But though it may not be attended by the visible manifestation of God's displeasure, it is no less heinous in His sight, and all who give themselves up to hypocrisy, deception, lying and covetousness, need to know that they are destroying their own souls.
When Jonathan Edwards finally resolved in his mind what was most important in mankind’s benevolence to their fellow neighbour in every conversation, he said we choose whether we are going to
a) affirm the positive or dwell on the negative
b) spotlight the growth or the weakness
c) celebrate the victories or rehash the failures
d) encourage (give courage to another) or discourage (take courage from another)
e) think the worst or assume the best
f) draw them to Christ or push them away
Whatever we choose to say or do today, will make a difference in someone's life, one way or another and finally ours. Because what goes around, comes around! This is the last massage in the series, “I’LL GIVE YOU POWER”. Come let us walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, and Speak truthfully one to another today.
