Encouraging workers in the field of the Lord.

Make Me a Servant

“The purpose of life is not to win. The purpose of life is to grow and to share. When you come to look back on all that you have done in life, you will get more satisfaction from the pleasure you have brought into other people's lives than you will from the times that you outdid and defeated them.”

By Rabbi Harold Kushner

This is the 267th letter:

Text for the day: James 3:14 (King James Version)

But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

Our Theme for the day: “Wounded Soldier” Part 2 (Make Me a Servant)

Our Devotional

July 11th 2011 has come and gone and most people around the world went on with their daily routine as normal. On this day in Washington DC, by some, it was not forgotten, but celebrated. This day is best known as Volunteer Day or a day to give back. This day is an annual event organized by Leadership Greater Washington (LGW) that focuses on giving back to the community. LGW is a nonprofit organization whose mission it is to identify and connect diverse local leaders in order to facilitate finding solutions to regional challenges.

Around the world today, there are many challenges, you name them we have them. Our biggest problem is not the challenges; this is only the out growth of an internal cancer that is killing our communities physically and spiritually. Our biggest problem is coming close to those I need. If we came close to all in need by our personal and loving effort, over 70% of this world challenges would be solved and Jesus would soon come. If less time was given to talk, and more time was spent in personal effect, greater results would be seen. Let us ask this question which was posed by Cain as recorded in Genesis 4:9, "Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Writer Judith Moriarty states that, “I believe that we are all gifts to one another.” What do you believe? In looking at what is of real value to men. Judith goes on to say in her writing, “Am I My Brother's Keeper?” In a world saturated with materialistic wonders, of yachts, exotic getaways, luxury vehicles, designer clothing, upscale exquisite cuisine, and vacation cabins, who has time for the cheap, the common junk of life? In our seeking out of titles, money, being popular, recognized, and looking for political gain, how often do we pass by and miss the gift,” inside of us all. That I am my brother’s keeper! Has it not occured to you that there is a gift right inside of you?” Yes we are our brother’s keeper.

The Bible says that hatred blinded the eyes of Cain and caused him to finally kill his brother. Could it be said that hatred is blinding most people’s eyes today? Could this be the main reason behind the killings around the world? It is said, “If a person (or nation) succumbs to hatred, they willfully sacrifice awareness". One cannot refuse the truth without suffering the consequences. Why do most people find delight in the spirit of hate?

The answer can only be found in the Bible, "But he that hateth his brother is in darkness and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness has blinded his eyes,” 1 John 2:11. It’s time to wake up, Jesus is coming! "Am I my brother's keeper?" One cannot be a good keeper or mindful of others welfare when they harbor malice, bitterness, unforgiveness, jealousy, envy strife, variance, emulation, etc. Galatians 5:19-24.

If one professes kindness, concern for others, a love for humanity, a peacemaker; yet harbors any of these hateful attributes within him/herself, it is better that they not add hypocrisy to the list by trying to help others.

Everyday is Volunteers day and a need for loving service unto the Lord. Can God depend on you?

Today, the poor in spirit and those physically challenged, need to be relieved. The sick cared for, the sorrowing and the bereaved comforted, the ignorant instructed, the inexperienced counseled, and the jobless helped until they get back on their feet. We are called to "weep with those that weep, and rejoice with those that rejoice", Romans 12:9-21. You can do great things for the kingdom of God today, if you have the spirit of persuasion, prayer, and the love of God, your day will not be without fruit. May someone see the healing of Jesus in you, as you volunteer one or two hours to Jesus in service today. Make me a servant should be our prayer not just once a year, but every day, Amen.
