Text for the day: Acts 2:12
And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What Meaneth this?
Our Devotional
For the last nine days, I have had the privilege of attending twenty two Holy Spirit filled meetings at Bermuda Institute and the Southampton S.D.A complex. To those who have been praying for me and my family, thank you, and to our faithful readers of Garden Ministry we have been praying for you.
In reading a story about one of the Kentucky Derby’s races this past week, I came across a story of a rainy race day. I will paraphrase the story, “Rain had fallen overnight but by mid-morning, the sun was trying to come out. At the race track, the surface was changed from muddy to fast. However, more rain was forecast and arrived as predicted. The weather map showed a powerful storm headed toward Louisville and it hit prior to the Derby, Which has at 6:04 p.m. post time. About 4:10 p.m., nearly two hours before post time to the Kentucky Derby it began raining hard. The track turned sloppy in a matter of minutes.
The rain started to fall and the crowd headed for cover as a thunderstorm hit the area. The question asked by all was, “will the race go on?” With no training allowed due to the track condition and a sealing off of the track all riders and horses where summoned. The last Derby horse to arrive on the track had come. Eighteen horses headed for the starting gate at Churchill Downs, and the "race was on.”
Like the thunderstorm that had come on that derby race day which caused the surface of the track to move to a fast and slippery state, "The Bible predicts that one day, the promise of the latter rain or final outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the last days shall come." But like the rain that had fallen overnight on that Kentucky Derby horse racing day which left the track surface muddy, “The Bible says that the prophet Joel also predicted its forecast and arrival. This is what is known as the early rain, Joel 2:23.
In Acts 2: 1-13, noise went forth as to why there was so much movement among the believers. But confused to what was happening and thinking that the followers of Jesus have lost their minds or been out drinking. The brethren could not keep silent any longer, where by Peter stood up, and speaks to the leaders and people of different countries about the promise of the Holy Spirit, which was fulfilled in their hearing that day. Now, as their minds are set at ease, three thousand people take heed to the message and give their hearts to Jesus, Acts 2:14-41.
Like those men who where visiting Jerusalem for the Passover and now on their way home around fifty days latter, many people have formed opinions since that day. But not like the visiting Jews who were in a genuine puzzling spirit, to excitedly discuss its importance, but to find fault. This subject on forming bad opinions of others is a thing we should not take lightly. The questions of why is it that we are so quick to form opinions, beliefs or judgments on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty is wrong. When God made men, He made them with the ability to have personal views, attitudes, or appraisals of life. Before we right off those visiting Jews and say what was wrong with them or form our own opinions. Opinions, are not all bad in them selves if the motive is pure. Some say these leaders should have been given time before they opened their mouths. Others say that they just did what came naturally. On the other hand, forming a hasty opinion is unwise and can work against you. Infect, the reality is you regret it later. It is always better to form an opinion on something after you have all the facts.
Today there is someone who has formed an opinion on something or someone, “God is saying stop!”
When these disciples went into the upper room at the beginning of those ten days, they had spiritual problems, and they were not on one accorded. They were fighting and backbiting, kicking each other, and cussing under their breath. But at the end of those ten days, the Holy Spirit had broken down their pride and foolishness toward one another. This is not the day to form bad opinions against your brother or sister. This is the day to be renewed in heart and reformed in life. Today, sad to say, some ministers and churches are so desirous of securing an increase of numbers that they do not bear faithful testimony against unchristian habits and practices. They go around forming bad opinions against their own brethren. These are not God’s servants while in this state of mind, but Satan's subjects.
It is time, as of today, for our lives to testify to the change of leaders, Jesus or Satan. It is time for all to become united in Christ first. Let us stop being agents and decoys for Satan in forming bad opinions and leading souls away from God. Satan has his false lights out there, but you must purpose in your heart not to be one, luring the unwary to perdition. There are some who are trying to make the Christian's path broad and pleasant for those who still love the world. But God has not smoothed or widened the rugged, narrow way. If we would enter into life, we must follow the same path which Jesus and His disciples trod--the path of humility, self-denial, and sacrifice. May God help us to this end today!
