"Am I my brother's keeper?" (Part 4 "Why is your face downcast")

Why is your face downcast?

Our Devotional

When God designed the human family, He made them with emotions. 
But after sin entered Adam and Eve, his children took on an emotional
change. This led to them not being fully able to control their emotions
at times. So why is it so important to control your emotions? 
Because if you don’t they will control you. Although we cannot
completely hide our emotions in our face and eyes,
they can unconsciously reveal what’s happening to us. 
In our text today, God is pictured talking to Cain (Genesis 4:6).
This second question by God to Cain, had to do with his facial
expression.
“Why is your face downcast?”
Some responses are hidden from sight but no less important,
such as the myriad changes that occur in organs,
other than blood vessels, skin, and heart. Most psychiatrists agree that 
most people nurse their feelings until they boil over and you can see it
in their facial expressions. 

Science News May 12, 2007 puts it this way, “Most people don't appreciate an angry look, but a new University of Michigan psychology study found that some people find angry expressions so rewarding that they will readily learn ways to encourage them. It's kind of striking that an angry facial expression is consciously valued as a very negative signal by almost everyone, yet at a non-conscious level can be like a tasty morsel that some people will vigorously work for," said Oliver Schultheiss, co-author of the study and a U-M associate professor of psychology. The findings may explain why some people like to tease each other so much, he added.

If we would only look on the bright side, instead of the dark side of life, we will see things better. When we are angry, we all show facial expressions. Sometimes we even magnify our supposed grievances, nurse our wrath, and fill our minds with revengeful, hateful feelings, when in truth we had no real cause for these feelings. It is at this point if we would listen when God speaks by His Holy Spirit saying, “Why is your face downcast?” “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Today why not ask God to help you resist your wrong feelings, that you may experience a great change in your association with your fellowmen. Heaven shall be filled with people with pleasant facial expressions, why not practice them today? But of ourselves we can’t love and have good feelings in our hearts to one another. Like the song by Jonathan Butler says, “We Need You Lord, we need you Lord right now. We can only have pleasant emotions by God dwelling in us. May He dwell in you today!
