Encouraging workers in the field of the Lord.

"Am I my brother's keeper?" (Part 2 Why are you angry?)

This is the 197th letter:

Those who at any supposed provocation feel at liberty to indulge their anger or resentment are opening the heart to Satan. On the other hand there is an indignation that is justifiable to God. Like when one see’s that God name or service is dishonored and brought into disrepute, or when you see the innocent oppressed. God will have respect to a righteous indignation that stirs the soul of the offender. Such anger is born of sensitive morals, and this is not a sin.

Text for the day: James 1:19-20 (New King James Version)

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Our Theme for the day: “Am I my brother's keeper?” (Part 2 Why are you angry?)

Our Devotional

Have you not noticed how so many people are in a spirit of anger these days? Some have gone so far as to say, “It’s a peculiar yet predictable emotion”; but is it? The beginning of Anger is as a drop of water. Anger can also start as an irritant, or as a frustration. When you first think about it, it’s nothing big, just an aggravation, e.g., you can be driving your car and someone cuts you off, you are just about ready to park, and someone rushes in to take your parking place, It can be as little as riding a bike and a truck pulls in front of you on the highway, most of us will say if that was me I would be angry. A new worker, on their first day, is slow and you are in a hurry to finish, or the dinner burns. These are all drops of water someone said, and every time something happens, that can leave you angry if you let it.

These seemingly innocent drops of anger lead to a bucket full of rage. The final outgrowth is taking revenge, blind bitterness, and what some call unharnessed hatred. We eventually go around with an unhappy face, and trust no one. These are those who bare their teeth at anyone who gets near. They become walking time bombs, which given just the right tension and fear, will explode. This was the spirit of Cain to his only brother Abel. By the time God openly confronted Cain He asked him this question; “Why are you angry?” Cain had allowed anger to get the best of him. He could not sleep until he shut down or killed his brother.

Looking at the definition of anger from the dictionary we see that, “anger is a strong feeling of displeasure, hostility or antagonism towards someone or something, usually combined with an urge to harm or cause pain.” To meditate on the anger that you’re feeling is evil, and to react on that feeling while in a state of anger, the Bible calls murder. This is what Cain did because he felt that GOD over looked him and favored his brother. Genesis 4:8.

Anger is an emotion, and we need to learn through Christ how to control our emotions. “There is another point that needs to be addressed and that is perception!” To most people if they perceive that they have been offended or wronged, there is a tendency to undo that wrongdoing by retaliation. Some have described anger as a normal emotion that involves a strong uncomfortable and emotional response to a perceived provocation. Still others view anger as part of the fight or flight brain response to the perceived threat or harm. Anger becomes the predominant feeling behaviorally, cognitively, and psychologically when a person makes the conscious choice to take an adverse action to immediately stop the threatening behavior of a perceived outside force.

Let us take a look at the health of one who does not control their anger. If anger is not controlled it may have physical correlates such as increased heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Noradrenaline is a neurotransmitter and a catecholamine-type hormone that is manufactured as a drug and produced naturally in the human body. It is also called norepinephrine, especially by those in the medical field. This hormone acts on the parts of the brain involved with responses and fear. This neurotransmitter is released into the blood from the brain's adrenal glands and from nerves called adrenergic nerves. As a drug, noradrenalin catecholamine is commonly used to control low blood pressure and to treat chronic depression.

When the body needs to react quickly to stress, this neurotransmitter increases blood pressure and heart rate, and gets the muscles ready to escape or fight. Too little of this chemical in the body can cause a person to become lethargic and sleepy. Those with low levels of noradrenaline generally have difficulty staying awake, concentrating, and paying attention to tasks. High levels of this chemical in the body can mirror symptoms of overdose, including nervousness, racing thoughts, cold hands and feet, and high blood pressure. Scientist has found that anger adds to a higher than normal level of noradrenaline in the body. This may be a factor that contributes to the high rate of high blood pressure, and heart attacks.

Although the relation of hostility and anger to coronary heart disease and heart attacks has been debated for decades, it is one of those things you should not take for granted. According the Yale University study published February 25, 2009 study on, “Anger Leads to Heart Attack.” “Anger and other high emotions can trigger deadly heart rhythms in certain vulnerable people”, were according to the study. Studies conducted earlier have linked negative emotions like hostility and depression with risks for developing heart disease, and have also shown that events such as earthquakes, war or even the loss of a World Cup Soccer match can increase rates of death from sudden cardiac arrest, in which the heart stops circulating blood”…. “It has definitely been shown in all different ways that when you put a whole population under stress, that sudden death will increase," said Dr. Rachel Lampert, an associate professor of cardiology and electrophysiology of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and a lead researcher of the study.

The researchers say that though more research is still to be done, the current study is the first evidence showing that the changes in the ECG (Electro-Cardiogram) brought on by anger and other negative emotions, can predict arrhythmia and may be the cause of some cases of heart attacks. “More than 400,000 people die each year from a sudden cardiac death in the United States alone.” The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Although anger is the predominant feeling behaviorally, cognitively, and psychologically when a person makes the conscious choice to take action to immediately stop the threatening behavior of an outside force. This is not the teaching of the Bible and those who follow God. We are encouraged to, “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!” Psalm 37:8

A man of quick temper acts foolishly, and a man of evil devices is hated. Proverbs 14:17

Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly. Proverbs 14:29

Modern psychologists, in contrast to the Bible have pointed out the possible harmful effects of suppressing ones anger. The question is, “When shall we stop making excuses for our anger?” To those who are looking for help with their anger the Bible says; “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.” Ephesians 4:31-32

Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:26-27, 31-32

But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Colossians 3:8”

Today the blood of someone is crying out to God from the ground, because someone could not control their anger. Today many people are asking questions and looking for answers in our angry streets. The answer to these questions can be found in the life of Cain and Able.

Finally I leave you with this poem on anger that the Lord gave me. “Is that any way to live? What good has hatred or anger thrilled? What hope has anger ever created? What problems have ever been resolved by anger or hatred? Only more anger to be debated. For the good of our nation, we must be passionate to stop the anger at our feet. So don’t get evolved, when anger calls. Keep your head high and look to God on high, and then you well see that this to shall pass, by and by!”
