Text for the day: Isaiah 61:3
“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.”
Our Devotional
To afflict someone the dictionary say is to distress them physically, or mentally. We have seen so far in our series that some people love to see other people in a state of pain, distress, grief, or in a state of misery. On the other hand causing mental or bodily pain that leads to sickness, loss, calamity, and persecution of someone is not acceptable in the eyes of the Lord. This has been a hard year so far, for many people. Loss of jobs, higher rents, food prices out of control, and the list goes on and on. Human affliction is the worst affliction to be able to overcome and even forgive at times.
Affliction and adversity may cause much inconvenience and even great depression at times, but it is prosperity that is dangerous to spiritual life. Unless we are in constant submission to the will of God, we can’t be sanctified by the truth. We must all pass through the valley of humiliation like Jesus, Isaiah 53, where men depend on God to teach them and to guide their every step, it is there we find comparative safety. It is not until we feel our need of the strong Arm of God that the arm of flesh is broken. Unless we make God our dependence, our view of things will stay distorted and we will finally fall.
The call today is to be a partaker of the divine nature, 2 Peter 1:3-4. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about, in the body, the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10, 17-18.
One day soon, you who are afflicted, Jesus will come. On that day, you will see that your latter will be greater than your past; you will be blessed, more than you could ask. Despite all that has been done, the best is yet to come. And your latter will be greater, your latter will be greater, your latter will be greater than your past.
