This past weekend, the eyes of most people around the world, were looking at the prediction of a man who claimed that God had given him special insight into the future, and the end of the world. Saturday May 21 was the day set for Judgment Day, with the End of the World following this year October 21, 2011 he claims. Date setting and putting one's trust in men is not a new thing; this has been around for years. In fact Jesus Himself said, there shall be time setters, or dooms day predictors in the last days. But is this a good thing?
Every week around the world, someone is claiming that they have been given a message from God to bring all to the knowledge of a loving God. No one should argue with this, because God speaks through whom He chooses. The problem with some of these messages is that they are saying, “If the people don’t repent and come to God by a set time or on a set day, judgment will come". One of the biggest challenges we have in all this is that many of these messengers are not following the entire Bible themselves. This reminds me of the words of Jesus when He said, "beware of false prophets that will come in my name, but their motive is to deceive" (Matthew 24:4-5, 24).
There are two other motives of these false prophets, to gain fame and fortune through lies, which bring a negative effect on the church. In the days of Paul he had to contend with this spirit of self and falsehood in the church, (2 Thessalonians 2:7-9). You may ask, what causes someone to speak against the Bible and finally the church? The answer can be found in 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12).
The teaching so widely echoed by many false prophets and teachers these days is that the second advent of Christ is His coming to each individual at death. But this is a device set up by Satan to divert the minds of mankind from the personal, visible, and audible return of Jesus in the clouds of heaven. For years Satan has thus been saying, “Behold, He is in the secret chambers" (Matthew 24:23-26); and many souls have been lost by accepting this deception.
This week let us come to the true design of the Bible given by God, which is to guide all who wish to become acquainted with the will of their Maker. God gave to men the sure word of prophecy; the Holy spirit, angels and even Christ Himself came to make known to Holy men the things that God wanted men to know about Himself, (2 Timothy 3:16). Paul shares, however, what each human author had in common. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God. . ." Why is knowing this important?
Because regardless of what kind of men authored the Bible, the true author is God Himself. Yet relaying His message to the hearts of man, God drew from varied backgrounds, skills, and interests because mankind is unique and varied.
When it came to those important matters that concern our salvation, they were not left concealed in mystery. They were not revealed in such a way as to perplex and mislead the honest seeker after truth. The Lord by the prophet Habakkuk said: "Write the vision, and make it plain, that he may run that readeth it." Habakkuk 2:2. The word of God is plain to all who study it with a prayerful and honest heart, (Psalm 97:11). Most people these days just open their Bible and just start reading what’s before them, for others they start form the beginning of the Old or New Testament, and still others study the Bible by subject. Ø Let us pray for Missouri where at least 116 people are now confirmed dead after a tornado hit the city of Joplin on Sunday, crushing cars and flattening homes. The tornado cut a path six miles (10km) long through the city, much of which is now without power. More than 1,150 people have been treated for injuries stemming from the tornado, the Joplin Globe newspaper reported. The tornado knocked down power lines and telephone services remain largely cut off, and approximately one quarter or more of the city, home to about 50,000 people, had been damaged.
