“Affliction comes to us, not to make us sad but sober;
not to make us sorry but wise.”
Henry Ward Beecher
This is the 257th letter:
Text for the day: James 1:2-3, 12
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Our Devotional
How do you react when you hear that someone is living in sin? Do you act all holy, and spiritual, as if you have never sinned, or do you seek to help them come back to God? To be truthful, most of us stand off, watch, talk about them, and hope that they would pass away in their sins. But is this the spirit of God? No!!! You may ask what is the spirit of heaven to those who a afflicted by their own vice? To only seek and save, Luke 19:10. The next time you are about to walk pass or over look someone who has fallen into sin, remember, some of the best Christians today have come through the road of self affliction.
To those who have fallen into sin, but have found your way back to God, today’s devotion is in honor of the power of the Holy Spirit in you. Consider Frank a twenty six year old, who once worshiped God but turned his back on Him. After four years of living in sin, he has now turned around, and repented of his sins. On Frank’s second week of coming to church he was approached by the deaconess who said to him, I remember you, “You are the big drug pusher from up the road.” “You are not changed, you are still the same”. Was this the right thing to say to Frank? Thank God Frank went on serving God and did not turn back, but there are others that are not so fortunate.
To you who stand on the side and cast stones at those who are trying to find Jesus, God has a word for you. Who are you, says the Lord to pull down your brothers and sisters, when they are trying to get up? Why do you find so much joy in keeping those who are seeking for me? Why do you ask questions like which family are you from, what school did you go to, or do you have a criminal record and set up road blocks drive those in sin future from me?
If you have gone through an affliction and now you have stopped going to church, don’t give up, God still loves you. Re-look at your position, and consider as Paul did that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to the saints, Romans 8:18. “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken,” Psalm 34:17-20.
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. But God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it, 1 Corinthians 10:13.
In our afflictions, let us learn to gather warmth from negative words and actions. By this the depth of our love to God will be revealed. As you have been afflicted and tested, but have now come back to the Lord, time to admonish and helping others through their afflictions find their purpose in Jesus. Some may condemn you, but the word of God is, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1.
Are you afflicted because of your pass? Let us pray. Have you overcome your affliction and with a cheerful spirit are helping other? Sing praise’s to God. We need to rejoice in our sufferings, and affliction, knowing that this will produce endurance and our endurance will produce character, and our character will produce hope, and when hope is perfected, God will give us the kingdom.
