Some customs worth keeping

This is the 91st letter:

Text for the day: Job 1:5

And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: Thus did Job continually.

Our Theme for the day: “The true Watchers and Prayers” (Part 10)

Some customs worth keeping

Our Devotional

We live in a world where customs and traditions are getting the best of most of us. Why is it that most people allow their lives to become govern by customs and traditions? Not that there is anything wrong with some customs or traditions. But when it comes to truth, custom and tradition hold no weight. In the area of prayer almost every church has their stand on how to pray, when to pray, and the giving of thanks for answered prayer. Our concern today is not about what the church may think, or may not think about prayer, but what God thinks! As God is looking down upon His people, He is fixing His eyes upon the crisis which is to take the world by surprise. The calamities by land and sea, the unsettled state of society, the alarms of war, are portentous. They forecast approaching events of the greatest magnitude the agencies of evil are combining their forces and consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis. Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones. (9T 11)The Bible does not teach us when one should pray, although there are set times in the Bible when man prayed. God is longing to meet with His people. The song writer said it well; just a little talk with Jesus makes it alright, because you are in the presence of the King of kings. As servant leaders we must long for His presence? Abraham longed for his presence; the Bible says he got up early in the morning to meet with God. (Genesis 19:27) And Jacob longed for time with the Lord, where (Genesis 28:18) says, he rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

After working the first forty years of his life against God, the record of Moses life says God refashioned him in the wilderness and now at eighty he wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and built an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel and worshiped God. (Exodus 24:4) And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, it may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually. (Job 1:5) Note in all this Job did not sin but gave thanks. You may ask, "How can I thank God for answering my prayer, when I don't see the answer yet?" Job was having hardship and pain. Satan was all over his back, but could not control him. Job’s mind was fortified by the promises of God’s word. God had promised the answer, and that was good enough to thank Him. Suppose some-one promised to buy a new suit for me next week. Would I thank them before or after I received the suit? You would immediately thank them, even though you don't actually have it yet. You will thank them, because you believe their word. The same is true of God. God promised to answer our prayers, and His promise is good enough to solicit gratitude from us.

So after you have prayed and believed that you have received the answer, then thank God for the answer. Today let us stop asking God for our blessings, and start thanking Him for the answer. The Bible says, “But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57) Jesus when praying to His father to bless the bread and fish, He then gave thanks. “And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fish. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.” (John 6:11-13) Finally, you may have to face hardship for your faith and prayer life to God like Daniel, but God said be faithful. “Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he knelt upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.” (Daniel 6:10) Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep went from him.

Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever, my God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and break all their bones in pieces, before their bodies came to the bottom of the den. Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. I make a decree, that in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and steadfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian. (Daniel 6:18-28) May God cause you to prosper as you give Him thanks in whatever you are going through today.
