Encouraging workers in the field of the Lord.

Forgiveness is more than just words

This is the Eighth letter:

Text for the day: Exodus 32:32

Yet now, if you will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of your book which you have written."

Our Theme for the day: Forgiveness is more than just words

Forgiveness is not an easy thing to do, but it's the best way to restore a broken relationship. As leaders and workers in the call to minister for others, one of the most important ingredients we must have is the spirit of forgiveness. We can't buy forgiveness, neither can we work long hours for it, but we must seek God for it. In Exodus 32:32, Moses is seen talking to God as a man talks to his friend, but in this setting Moses is not asking but telling God to forgive His people of their sins, and if not, blot him out of His book which He has written. Only a few days had passed since the Hebrews had made a solemn covenant with God to obey His voice. They had stood trembling with terror before the mount, listening to the words of the Lord, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." The glory of God still hovered above Sinai in the sight of the congregation; but they turned away, and asked for other gods. Friend it is clear to all parties that Israel had done wrong, "They made a molten image of a calf and worshiped it. Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox." Psalm 106:19, 20. How could greater ingratitude have been shown or more daring insult offered, to Him who had revealed Himself to them as a tender father and an all-powerful king! God's covenant with His people had been disannulled, and He declared to Moses, "Let Me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them. In other words, the maker of the universe had come to an end with His people, and it was time to move on and make of Moses a new nation. To many a new beginning is the best news in the world, but is it the best way to build a relationship? In the words of the South African Desmond Tutu, he says "Without forgiveness, there's no future". It seems that Moses understood the glue that held a people to their God, and a God to His people, forgiveness. Forgiveness is more than just words, but words in action.
