Andrea D. Oliver once gave a speech entitled “Today’s Leaders, C ultivating Young Thinkers and Doers”. In her speech there was one thing that was outstanding to me. She said, “The human mind becomes dwarfed and enfeebled when dealing with common-place matters only, never rising above the level of time and sense to grasp the mysteries of the unseen. The understanding is gradually brought to the level of the things with which it is constantly familiar. The mind will contract its powers and lose its ability, if it is not exercised to acquire additional knowledge, and put to the stretch to comprehend the revelations of divine power in nature and in the Sacred Word.” Did you not know that God has made our minds in such a way that it has the capacity to be stretched beyond our imagination? If our minds are stretched according to his will, we will be able to think the loftiest thoughts that we as humans are capable of thinking.
With this in mind, let us look at the qualities that help to make a good servant leader. Today people are looking for people to lead them who know the way, goes the way, and shows the way. In the fast race of time most people are longing to glorify themselves and not Jesus in their service to others. They seek the Governments support but not their advice. They seek the worlds accepts, but not its culture. We make compromises the standard of our live, and then we wonder or ask the question, “What about the children”? “Everything we do will influence the people we meet to make a decision--a decision for or against the truth. What do our words; actions, dress, and diet say to those whose only sermon will be what they see in us? M any of them will be under conviction, but they will also be looking for a loophole around the unpopular demands of truth.”
He goes on to say; “C hrist is coming very soon. These final probationary moments are for preparing to meet Him. Others may not believe this, but we know it is true. There is no time to waste on the inanities of TV , dancing, theatre, and worldly pleasures. B y the power of consistent holy living we must draw others away from the emptiness of materialism. Satan is almost having his way all around this polluted planet. Even popular religion has been infiltrated and manipulated by him.” The book C reeping C ompromise chapter 12 by Joe C rews
The biblical record of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, helps us see that Shem understood the most important quality of having integrity, that he may be able to give to the world an example worthy of imitation. Firstly, if we are going to see a change in our neighbourhood and communities then it must first begin with us. We should not hesitate to let it be seen that in addition to our skill to work with God to treat disease of sin, we are continually gaining wisdom and knowledge daily from the word which points us to C hrist, the greatest teacher the world has ever known. Secondly, we deem the connection with God who is the Source of all wisdom paramount, in order to be successful in this world and the world to come. Thirdly, we must ask ourselves individually, what will it take in me, to help our young people get from here to there?
Fourthly, what is the key for preparing the young people to fill the role God has created for them? An important, yet neglected, part of the answer lies in this statement, “Every human being, created in the image of God, is endowed with a power akin to that of the C reator—individuality, power to think and to do. The men in whom this power is developed are the men who bear responsibilities, who are leaders in enterprise, and who influence character.” If we are going to do better, then we must first begin by seeing our youth as individuals to whom God has bestowed special gifts for their own times. We must help them cultivate the power to think—power to think their own thoughts, to evaluate the merits of others’ thoughts, and to think outside of the box to find solutions to the problems facing the church and the world today.
We also must help them cultivate the power to do—power to execute the visions they dream up, skill to accomplish the tasks they lay out, and wisdom to focus their energies judiciously, without growing weary with too many responsibilities. It is said that truth has a power to elevate the receiver. If the B ible truths are allowed to exert its sanctifying influence upon the heart and character, it will make believers more intelligent.
A C hild of God will understand his responsibilities to God and to his fellow-men. When one is truly connected with the Lamb of God who gave his life for the world, they will continually make improvements of their intellectual as well as their moral powers in hope to answer the purpose of our C reator in this world and the world to come. Finally, God is displeased with those who are too careless or indolent to become efficient, well-informed workers for those who perish. To those who have accepted Jesus as their Saviour and soon coming K ing, God has given you the power to possess more intelligence and keener discernment than those who have not. God has made it that the study of His word should be continually expanding your mind and strengthening your intellect. There is nothing that will so refine and elevate your character and give vigor to every faculty, as the continual exercise of the mind to grasp and comprehend weighty and important truths from the B ible.
