GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

Unbending principles will mark the course of those who sit at the feet of Jesus and learn of Him.

This is the 194th letter:

Text for the day: Lamentations 3:23-24 New King James Version)

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Our Theme for the day: “Great is thy faithfulness”

Our Devotional

Over the last thirty years have you not notice how careless people have become? Let me say, today’s devotional is not to point fingers at anyone or anything but only to lift the mind heavenward and to be of a helping hand to those in our communities. Yes thirty years has passed, but how far have we come in helping each other? New governments have come, and old ones have gone, but the needs of the people are getting greater. In some places around the world, these new governments of the people have been filled with extortion and violent crime. Of late, there has also been a honeymoon of some people from former governmental systems to the point of formal marriages of the two.

The down side to all this is that many people are now saying how full of crime, disobedience and sin our nations have become. As I talk with so many people from different denominations, they are also saying how sad, how terribly sad is the fact that the world does not recognize the love of God in giving Jesus Christ as our Redeemer his proper place in our society.  The song writer was right, “Jesus is the answer for the world today,” to these worlds’ great problems. We live in a world where many think that God sent His son in vain, but this is far from the truth. The Bible is clear on this point, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Sin has for ages disturbed, or I might say, impeded the great work of divine benevolence by obstructing the channel through human agencies that refuse to receive the heavenly gift and therefore cannot impart the same. But God’s love has not changed, infact it is still open to all who believe.

Although sin and wickedness have disturbed for the pass thirty years the flow of Gods rich grace, yet this flow has not been cut off from earth. It’s course is earthward, and if all would only cooperate with God, we would see a difference. Today God is waiting for three things.

1.    Firstly, God is waiting for us to become true channels of love. The world is crying out for it. Let us stop hiding ourselves from those who need us most, but make ourselves available to them through the love of Jesus. (Luke 19:10)

2.    Secondly, God is waiting for us to become good communicators. This may mean that you may have to go back to school to take a course in communication. Seek out a community education program, or start a course in your church for your community! The positive thing about this is that through healthy communication the line of openness and understanding is developed and peace is brought back to the home, and community. (Malachi 4:5-6)

3.    Thirdly, God is longing to shine His full glory on the inhabitants of this world. When these two things are done, then the light of the glory of heaven would shine in all parts of the world, and scatter the moral darkness of which we see. (Isaiah 60:1-3)

God is calling for men and women to become consecrated as laborers with Jesus Christ. God is faithful on His part to help us. The question is, can He depend on you to be faithful on your part to help Him. It’s not that God needs us, we need Him, and that His will may be done through us to help all men. Have you seen Gods faithfulness lately? Have you tasted of His faithfulness today? Then open your heart and become a co- laborer with Christ, to make someone’s life better today. One person at a time!

As you go through this day, keep this song on your heart.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above. Join with all nature in manifold witness, To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth; Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Around the world:

We are all touch by someone around us. There is a need for prayer for the people of Zimbabwe who are suffering greatly. Between 2002 and 2009, hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans have lost their lives due to political murders, starvation and AIDS. Right now in Zimbabwe there is severe poverty. The country is operating without currency. People in Zimbabwe use U.S. dollars and South African rand, which are scarce notes. Buying goods and groceries in shops is made difficult by lack of change or coins.

Many towns are sustaining without tap water. Both urban and rural residents rely on borehole water, unprotected wells and rivers. The risks of cholera and other diseases are ever-present. Some boreholes and wells are in danger of running out of water in the midst of summer or shortly before the beginning of the rain season.

Our Devotional

Walter Breuning (born September 21, 1896) is an American super centenarian. He is the last known surviving man who was born in 1896. On his 110th birthday, Breuning was declared the oldest living retired railroader in the United States. Last week on January 17, 2011, Walter Breuning, aged 114 years, 118 days became one of the 60 undisputed oldest people ever to record. Mr Breuning is still able to dresses himself in a suit and tie every day. "Mornings he can still be up doing his exercises before his daily plans." What a man whose wife passed in 1957 with no children!

Besides Mr. Walter, the Bible speaks of other men that lived to a ripe old age. Genesis chapter five speaks to us of the generation of Adam to Noah. But when you read Matthew chapter one, the genealogy starts with Adam showing that Jesus was the direct descendent of David and Abraham. Then in Luke chapter 3:23-38, it helps us see that Jesus through Joseph was the son of the living God. There is one other thing worth looking at. Before the flood, mankind lived to over nine hundred years, and a few almost one Thousand years which in those days was a ripe old age. These super centenarians, who lived a number of centuries, were much appreciated by all in their generation. After the flood the life span of men lowered but there were still some who lived over one hundred years. Abraham was one of those persons who lived more than one hundred years of age. Like Walter Breuning he still had his vigor and strength. Infact the Bible says his second son (Isaac) was born to him when he was one hundred years old Genesis 21:5, to his wife Sarah.

But did Abraham understand the promise made to him by God that he would be a great nation? No! After Ishmael was born to his wife’s handmaid whose name was (Hagar), Abrahams mind clinged to the belief that through him God's gracious purposes were to be accomplished. But this was not God’s plan! In his affection for his first born son he exclaimed, "O that Ishmael might live before Thee!"  Again the promise was given, in words that could not be mistaken: "Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him." (Genesis 17:19) Yet God was not unmindful of the father's prayer. This was a reaffirmation of the promise of the birth of Isaac, putting him in line to inherit the covenant. (Genesis 17:6-8) "As for Ishmael," He said, "I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him and I will make him a great nation also." Verse 20 Abraham’s Hamito- Semitic son Ishmael was promised to be the progenitor of a great African/ Edenic (Arab Ishmaelite) nation.

After the birth of the long awaited promise, Isaac brought a lifelong answer to the fulfillment of Abraham and Sarah’s dearest hopes. Gladness filled the tents of Abraham and Sarah, but not for Hagar. This event was to her the overthrow of her fondly cherished ambitions. But Ishmael was born not as God had planned, but a work of human making. When Ishmael was a youth, he had been regarded by all in the encampment as the heir of Abraham's wealth and the inheritor of the blessings promised to his descendants. But now the day came when Ishmael was to be suddenly set aside. In the disappointment that followed, mother and son would now hate Sarah and Isaac. Isn’t it funny how something so innocent can be so wrong? Jealousy has destroyed so many good relationships. Jealousy has destroyed countries, nations, Governments, neighborhoods, work places, churches, schools, and even homes.

There is a lesson here of which we all need to remember. If we allow God to work out His will, we shall prosper. But when we put ourselves in the way of God’s work and do things our way it will spring forth jealousy, and then come to nought. Notice it wasn’t until Ishmael dared openly mock the real heir of God's promise that the venom of jealousy came out. Sometimes in life, God allows something bad to happen before you see the venom of jealousy in those who are closest to you. But Abraham was a faithful father.

Today there are only two places which we find ourselves, in a spirit of loveliness like Sarah, or in a spirit of jealousy like Hagar. Like Sarah, God has also opened your eyes to the turbulent disposition of your Ishmael’s in your children’s life. They have been a perpetual source of discord, and you must appeal to God, urging that your spiritual Hagar’s and Ishmael’s be sent away from the encampment.

You may be a leader like the great patriarch and thrown into great distress of how you could banish the work of your hand, or even the ministry of your own doing like the birth of Ishmael. The consoling promise to you today is that though separated from his father's home, Ishmael should not be forsaken by God; his life should be preserved, and he should become the father of a great nation. Abraham obeyed the angel's words, but it was not without keen suffering. The father's heart was heavy with unspoken grief as he sent away Hagar and Ishmael his son, but they had to go. If you have been asked by God to wait on Him, then wait, don’t go before Him or stand in the way of His plans. On the other hand you may be asked to put away or cut off what has not ordained by God. The call today is to wait, wait on the Lord. Like Abraham, God is the Faithful Father, and He deserves our thanks for His faithfulness and love to all men. God’s love is higher than the heavens; and His faithfulness reaches to the skies. Wait I say on the Lord.

The Refiner's fire (Part 3) The Silversmiths Reflection

In order to attain to our high calling of God in Christ Jesus, we must begin the day with our Saviour. The very first out-breathing of our soul in the morning should be for the presence of God. We can do nothing without Jesus, it is Him we need; his light, his life, his spirit, must be ours continually. We need Jesus every minute of the hour.

And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.

Our Theme for the day: “THE REFINER’S FIRE” (Part 3) The Silversmiths Reflection

Today we come to the close of our series, and we thank you for your comments.

Our Devotional

Have you ever sat back and read the bible wondering what is the hidden meaning behind the scripture you have just read? At times this can cause quite a conversation piece to those you come in contact with. Yet other times you can go through weeks pondering on that one scripture text or word. While reading the third chapter of Malachi there pops out a remarkable expression in the third verse: "And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." In order for one to fully appreciate this text, one needs to have knowledge of the work of a silversmith.

The work of the silversmith is made up mostly of sitting and watching. As they sit, their eyes must be steadily fixed on the furnace, for if the time necessary for refining be exceeded in the slightest degree, the silver will be injured. Our text today says, "He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." Does this mean that God through His Holy Spirit sees it needful to put His children into a furnace of hardship? There is much debate over this point today on do people truly benefit from hardship and misfortune?

On a world view on this subject 56% say yes, while 26% say no that we benefit from hardship and misfortune. The other 18% have not decided. Some have gone on to say that, “"Pain is the anvil on which character is wrought" and it seems to hold true. We often do not learn life's lessons from easy and abundant living. We also do not grow as human beings by having it all. We do, however, begin to appreciate all we have when something or someone is taken from us. Time and experience benefit all beings. From hardship we may learn generosity and from misfortune we may learn kindness. Life will always throw us a hand that we do not wish to play. It can be so unfair and so unyielding. All we can do is play the hand we're dealt and do the very best we can with it.

Today Jesus is working on our behalf before the Father. His eyes are steadily and intently on the work of purifying. We are reminded, “And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. (Malachi 3:3) We need to dispel the notion, that trials come by God to punish us. God does not bring trials, (Job chapter 1 and 2), but He allows them to come our way to bring out the best in all of us. Soon the day will come when Jesus will gather the faithful servants of His father unto Himself. Angels will help in that process, (Matthew 24:31). On that day He shall see His own image reflected in the redeemed. Like the silversmith He will say, “The process of purifying is completed, welcome home”!

Just as a silversmith’s chief occupation is to make and repair articles of silver and gold. Jesus chief occupation is to make mankind over again, and repair them to the image of God. When was the last time you saw the beauty, and felt the comforting touch of God in your life? May God bless you, as you yield yourself to the will and method of refining!
