Encouraging workers in the field of the Lord.

EVENING BLACK HISTORY AND EDUCATION HERITAGE SPECIAL

Good evening, family, friends, and colleagues,

I came home this afternoon and got involved in some old Bermuda history, and worked out, not in the gym , but in the garden, harvesting and lifting vegetables. It is a wonderful thing to share and give away the blessings of the garden to those who come. My daily prayer is, LORD let the ABUNDANT HARVEST GARDEN be a blessing to your children who needs.

If you ever doubt that farming builds both wealth and muscles, just visit me during harvesting days. The greatest need I have is helpers.

Did you know, "Useful occupation was appointed mankind as a blessing, to strengthen the body, to expand the mind, and to develop the character.?

It is said by them of old? "Let men and women work in field and orchard and garden. This will bring health and strength to nerve and muscle.... Every part of the human organism should be equally taxed. This is necessary for the harmonious development and action of every part.... God made nerve and muscle in order that they might be used. It is the inaction of the human machinery that brings suffering and disease."

We are also told that "More people die for want of exercise than through overfatigue; very many more rust out than wear out. Those who accustom themselves to proper exercise in the open air will generally have a good and vigorous circulation."

To those who love to exercise, "Morning exercise, in walking in the free, invigorating air of heaven, or cultivating flowers, small fruits, and vegetables, is necessary to a healthful circulation of the blood. It is the surest safeguard against colds, coughs, congestions of brain and lungs, inflammation of the liver, the kidneys, and the lungs, and a hundred other diseases."

"Go out and exercise every day, even though some things indoors have to be neglected."

Let us remember, "The more nearly we come into harmony with God's original plan, the more favorable will be our position for the recovery and preservation of health." I wish you a productive weekend and may your "sacks" always be full!" God bless you.

BERMUDA’S FIRST FEMALE POSTAL CARRIER

Today is the last day of our BLACK HISTORY AND EDUCATION MONTH we celebrate Bermuda’s First Female Postal Carrier.

Mrs. Evadne Colleen Paynter is a household name among many Bermuda’s. A gentle and loving person, who understood the importance of an honest days work. She was the wife of the late Lionel ''"Spookey'' Paynter Sr. She was the devoted mother of Lionel Jr., Howard, Keith, Sonia and Wanda Paynter and Paulette Ball.

Her siblings where the late Burt Smith and the late Deloris Adams. Her home was located on 143 South Shore Road, Smiths Parish Bermuda.

As it was in most neighborhoods during those days, the postal carriers were part of the family in the neighborhood. They knew the neighbor’s and the neighbor’s knew them.

Looking at the postal history of Bermuda. There is a book entitled, "The Bermuda Post Office Bicentennial — 1812 to 2012. This book unveils the history of Bermuda as, "one of the few countries in the world to officially record its postal history.

"The Bermuda Post Office is the oldest international business in Bermuda,” said Dr Simmons. “We are (over) 200 years old. There is so much to its story. The post office’s story is about far more than just delivering and sorting mail. This has a legacy that is linked to the United Nations’ Universal Postal Union which is the second oldest agency under the UN. It is tied to the premise that the right to mail and communicate is a universal human right...

During the Second World War, hundreds of British postal examiners stationed in Bermuda helped to uncover Nazi spy rings operating in the United States...

Sometimes the mail could take three weeks to cross the ocean to Bermuda if the winds were strong or it could take four months. There where a few times, the mail didn’t make it due to a ship sinking.

Although Mrs. Evadne Colleen Paynter would be long remembered for a long happy life, she passed away in the Lord in her 80th year. Her family, friends, and the community of Bermuda will celebrate her as the first female postal carrier.

Speaking about the first postal carrier sent by God to His people. The Bible makes it clear that, "Enoch" in Gen. 5:18-24 was a preacher of righteousness sent from God. He was the seventh generation from Adam by inclusive count.

Enoch was well-known and regarded very highly for his work. The book of Jude 14-15 says, "Enoch, was the seventh from Adam, who prophesied about the future and the second coming of Jesus. The Bible says, “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners ..."

"The Lord opened more fully to Enoch the plan of salvation, and by the Spirit of prophecy carried him down through the generations which should live after the Flood, and showed him the great events connected with the second coming of Christ and the end of the world (Jude 14).

Enoch was troubled in regard to the dead. It seemed to him that the righteous and the wicked would go to the dust together, and that would be their end. He could not clearly see the life of the just beyond the grave. In prophetic vision he was instructed in regard to the Son of God, who was to die man's sacrifice, and was shown the coming of Christ in the clouds of heaven, attended by the angelic host, to give life to the righteous dead and ransom them from their graves. He also saw the corrupt state of the world at the time when Christ should appear the second time—that there would be a boastful, presumptuous, self-willed generation arrayed in rebellion against the law of God and denying the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ, and trampling upon His blood and despising His atonement. He saw the righteous crowned with glory and honor while the wicked were separated from the presence of the Lord and consumed with fire....

Enoch continued to grow more heavenly while communing with God. His face was radiant with a holy light which would remain upon his countenance while instructing those who would hear his words of wisdom. His heavenly and dignified appearance struck the people with awe. The Lord loved Enoch because he steadfastly followed Him and abhorred iniquity and earnestly sought heavenly knowledge, that he might do His will perfectly. He yearned to unite himself still more closely to God, whom he feared, reverenced, and adored. God would not permit Enoch to die as other men, but sent His angels to take him to heaven without seeing death. In the presence of the righteous and the wicked, Enoch was removed from them. Those who loved him thought that God might have left him in some of his places of retirement, but after seeking him diligently, and being unable to find him, reported that he was not, for God took him." Genesis 5:21-24.

"This scripture brings to view the fact that there is a most earnest work to be done, and we need divine intuition that we may know how to work for souls ready to perish. There are souls to be plucked out of the fire, there are souls who are to be treated with the tenderest compassion. Workers are needed who have learned in the school of Christ His method of saving souls."

Are you ready to be a postal carrier for God today? If you say yes and need a helping hand to guide you, reach out to a spiritual leader, or you can contact me. It is my prayer that God will give you the tools you need, to deliver His heavenly mail to the world like Bermuda's first female postal carrier.

Have a wonderful day.

LET US PRAY FOR ALL CANDIDATES IN THE BERMUDA GENERAL ELECTION

With just a few hours before the Bermuda General Election on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, all who could vote, are asked to perform their civic duty by going to the polls and vote.  109 candidates have been officially nominated for the upcoming General Election. What is the landscape of the candidates in the Bermuda Election? These are the numbers according to their affiliated parties or as independents.

• 36 Progressive Labour Party (PLP)

• 36 One Bermuda Alliance (OBA)

• 27 Independent Candidates (INP)

• 10 Free Democratic Movement (FDM)

• 1 Emperial Group (EMP)

The big question on the minds of so many in this election season is, “Whether there is any room for an independent in the House of Assembly?” The answer is obvious, yes!

Infact, there is room for all parties and independents in the House of Assembly. Historically, Bermuda has always held its breath during the season of an election. Looking at the number of independent candidates in this year's election. My word to all is, to those who have been nominated to run for their party in any area of Bermuda, an independent candidate is just as worthy as any other candidate when it comes down to the representation of the people. Lest we forget, a candidate who is elected, is elected to serve the people and not the party, or themselves. They may represent their party, but they are the voice for the people, by the people. In the line of an independent candidate, let us look back on the late Stuart Hayward (1942–2022): who was a determined campaigner on behalf of ordinary people. He was a “visionary environmental campaigner who strived to challenge the status quo.” Stuart, “led the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce, a campaign group created to protect the island’s natural environment from the threat of increased development at a time when it was not fashionable to do so.”

Looking at the USA, Bernard Sanders is an example of an independent politician and activist who is a worker for the people. He is the senior United States senator from Vermont. As the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history, he maintains a close relationship with the Democratic Party. Having caucused with House and Senate Democrats for most of his congressional career. Sanders has been viewed as the leader of the modern American progressive movement. Sanders was a U.S. representative for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. Sanders was a major candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, finishing in second place both times.

In the 2024 general election of the House of Commons in England, six independent candidates were elected to serve as MPs. Now, before someone considers this message to be an anti-party or pro-independence message, it is not.

To those who are eligible to vote. You can be a part of a process that can keep Bermuda on the cutting edge of flourishing, thriving, good fortune, successful social status, international and local advancement, and most of all prosperity. Some will vote party Line. Some will vote based upon the performance of the candidates involvement and interest in their constituency. Some will vote for the candidates involvement and interest in the welfare of Bermuda. However you vote, have a word of prayer, and then vote. After, thank God for allowing you to exercise your civic duty.

However you vote, it is important that everyone be led by a good conscience when you vote. Romans 13:3-4 tells us that government is ordained by God. "For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer."

I believe, "When God prepares the table, you don't need to beg for a seat." In other words, "Just because candidates are showing up to your door, it doesn’t mean they got your back. Even Judas attended every prayer meeting." As we reflect on these things, let us pray for all 109 candidates as Jesus prayed for all His disciples.

The Bible says, "Spiritual things are spiritually discerned. Those who have no vital union with God are swayed one way or another; they put men's opinions in the front, and God's Word in the background. They grasp human assertions, that judgment against sin is contrary to God's benevolent character, and, while dwelling upon infinite benevolence, try to forget that there is such a thing as infinite justice.

When we (all) have right views of the power, greatness, and majesty of God, and of the weakness of man, we shall despise the assumptions of wisdom made by earth's so-called great men, who have none of Heaven's nobility in their characters. There is nothing for which men should be praised or exalted. There is no reason why the opinions of the learned should be trusted when they are disposed to measure divine things by their own perverted conceptions. Those who serve God are the only ones whose opinion and example it is safe to follow. A sanctified heart quickens and intensifies the mental powers. A living faith in God imparts energy; it gives calmness and repose of spirit and strength and nobility of character. Let me make it biblically clear for all. Daniel 2:21 says, "It is HE (meaning GOD) who changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and establishes kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and [greater] knowledge to those who have understanding!"

Today, I encourage all who know how to pray, to join me in prayer for the 2025 Bermuda General Election and all candidates. Let us pray for all officials in the election halls. Let us also pray for the good of Bermuda. The word of GOD says, " I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;" 1 Timothy 2:1-3.

To all candidates in the 2025 Bermuda General Election who are elected to serve. As Chaplain, you have my full support when you are elected to the House of Assembly. It is my prayer that God will bless your years of service with wisdom, knowledge, discernment, and understanding to lead Bermuda from strength to strength. To the people of Bermuda, as we all go to the voting polls, let us ask God to guide our vote for the good of Bermuda. May God's favor continue to shine as a light of prosperity, joy, peace, and love on every Bermudian citizen, visitor, and friend of Bermuda. Blessings, Blessings, Blessings.

THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM

"Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses." 1 Timothy 6:12.

History is filled with freedom fighters. But who are the real freedom fighters? "Ganga Zumba was a hero & freedom fighter who was central to the history and modern-day struggle of the Brazilian Black Movement, having led an alliance of “independent settlements” called Quilombo dos Palmares. An area located in northeastern Brazil, Quilombo dos Palmares was founded by runway Brazilian African captives in the late 16th century as resistance to colonizers and enslavers.

About 20k fugitive slaves, native Brazilians and various outcast groups (such as Jews & Muslims), inhabited Palmares throughout the period. (1600s—1694) The area became one of the first places, in the Americas, where Black captives found freedom. For almost a 100years, Black people in Quilombo fought against their oppressors, particularly the Portuguese who at that time attempted to colonize Brazil. Zumba led these attacks against the oppressors & despite repeated threats from the colonial authorities, Quilombo thrived as fugitive captive set up a collective economy based upon subsistence agriculture, trade, and communal land ownership.

His end came when attempting to establish a treaty with the Portuguese where the quilombo would no longer accept fugitive slaves or fight the Portuguese in exchange for permanent recognition of their land and freedom for those born in Palmares. The condition was for the palmarinos to move elsewhere—the Cucau Valley. In the treaty, the Portuguese confirmed their acceptance of Zumba is the supreme leader of his people. His nephew, Zumbi, the settlement’s military leader, disapproved and staged a coup against him. He chose resistance to the Portuguese. Ganga Zumba is poisoned later that year. The common belief is that it was by those siding with Zumbi. Those loyal to Ganga would move to the Cucau Valley to re-establish Palmares. Unfortunately, they would be captured and placed back into slavery. To hold on to Palmares territory, Zumbi turned his revolt on the Portuguese." BY African Archives.

As it is in the physical, so is it in the spiritual. This reflects the broader biblical theme that God often uses the physical to reveal spiritual truths. Because in this world, the natural always precedes the spiritual in the order of spiritual lessons.

"The controversy that was waged between Christ and Satan is renewed over every soul that leaves the black banner of the prince of darkness to march under the blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel. The evil one will present the most subtle allurements to draw those away from their allegiance who would be true to Heaven, but we must yield all the powers of our being into the service of God, and then we shall be kept from falling into the snares of the enemy..."

In our scripture text, "The earnest counsel given by the apostle Paul to Timothy, that he might not fail in doing his duty, should be set before the youth of today: “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12. Besetting sins must be battled with and overcome. Objectionable traits of character, whether hereditary or cultivated, should be taken up separately, and compared with the great rule of righteousness; and in the light reflected from the Word of God, they should be firmly resisted and overcome, through the strength of Christ...

Day by day, and hour by hour, there must be a vigorous process of self-denial and of sanctification going on within; and then the outward works will testify that Jesus is abiding in the heart by faith. Sanctification does not close the avenues of the soul to knowledge, but it comes to expand the mind, and to inspire it to search for truth, as for hidden treasure; and the knowledge of God's will advances the work of sanctification. There is a heaven, and O, how earnestly we should strive to reach it. I appeal to you ... to believe in Jesus as your Saviour. Believe that He is ready to help you by His grace, when you come to Him in sincerity. You must fight the good fight of faith. You must be wrestlers for the crown of life. Strive, for the grasp of Satan is upon you; and if you do not wrench yourselves from him, you will be palsied and ruined. The foe is on the right hand, and on the left, before you, and behind you; and you must trample him under your feet. Strive, for there is a crown to be won."

May God help us today as we continue to fight the good fight of faith. Have a HAPPY DAY! Blessings, Blessings, Blessings

WHO WILL SING THE REDEMPTION SONG?

On October 7th, 1980, the song Redemption song was released by Bob Marley and the Wailers from the album Uprising. The song is reported to have been written around 1979, appearing for the first time on a demo tape called "Dada Demos".

Some say the song is something of a last testament from reggae legend Bob Marley, as he continued to spread his message of emancipation far and wide.

The HONORABLE ROBERT NESTA MARLEY was born on February 6, 1945, in Nine Miles, St. Ann, Jamaica. He died on May 11, 1981, in Miami, Florida, U.S.

He was a Jamaican singer-songwriter whose thoughtful ongoing distillation of early ska, rock steady, and reggae musical forms blossomed in the 1970s into an electrifying rock-influenced hybrid that made him an international superstar. "Bob Marley was an incredible Pan-Africanist who used music to fight back against imperialism and elevate the struggle for Pan-African liberation and self-determination. Even though dead, his music still carries the strength and weight of human dignity."

Over the years, “Redemption Song” has touched many people's lives. Motivational speakers have spoken on it. Preachers have preached sermons about it. Children and grandmothers have danced to the lyrics of it. Young adults and adults, with grandfathers, have meditated on it.

The HOLY SCRIPTURES, teaches us, “The laborer for souls needs integrity, intelligence, industry, energy, and tact. This is clearly seen through the book of Revelation. John the Revelator saw in vision the saints, those who were redeemed from sin, and the earth, singing the Redemption song. "And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.

4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest." Revelation 15:2-4.

“After this I looked and saw a multitude too large to count, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”… Revelation 7:9-10.

“And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation. And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL in the midst of thee.” Isaiah 12:1–6.

Therefore, the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. Isaiah 51:11.

As we have seen, “Singing is one of the most effective means of impressing the heart with spiritual truth. How often to the soul hard-pressed and ready to despair, memory recalls some word of God's,--the long-forgotten burden of a childhood song,--and temptations lose their power, life takes on new meaning and new purpose, and courage and gladness are imparted to other souls! . . . As a part of religious service, singing is as much an act of worship as is prayer. Indeed, many a song is prayer. . . . As our Redeemer leads us to the threshold of the Infinite, flushed with the glory of God, we may catch the themes of praise and thanksgiving from the heavenly choir round about the throne; and as the echo of the angels' song is awakened in our earthly homes (today), hearts will be drawn closer to the heavenly singers. Heaven's communion begins on earth. We learn here the keynote of its praise," as we sing the redemption song.”

Putting it another way, “Difficulties will arise that will try your faith and patience. Face them bravely. Look on the bright side. If the work is hindered, be sure that it is not your fault, and then go forward, rejoicing in the Lord. Heaven is full of joy. It resounds with the praises of Him who made so wonderful a sacrifice for the redemption of the human race. Should not the church on earth be full of praise? Should not Christians publish throughout the world the joy of serving Christ? Those who in heaven join with the angelic choir in their anthem of praise must learn on earth the song of heaven, the keynote of which is thanksgiving.”

WHO WILL SING THE REDEMPTION SONG?

He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah. Psalm 24:4-6.

"There is a day just about to burst upon us when God's mysteries will be seen, and all His ways vindicated; when justice, mercy, and love will be the attributes of His throne. When the earthly warfare is accomplished, and the saints are all gathered home, our first theme will be the song of Moses, the servant of God. The second theme will be the song of the Lamb, the song of grace and redemption. This song will be louder, loftier, and in sublimer strains, echoing and re-echoing through the heavenly courts. Thus the song of God's providence is sung, connecting the varying dispensations; for all is now seen without a veil between the legal, the prophetical, and the gospel."

"On that day, when the conflict (between good and evil is over.) All tribulation and strife will be at an end. At this time, songs of victory will fill all heaven, as the redeemed stand around the throne of God. All the saved will take up the joyful strain, and say, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain” and hath redeemed us to God."

Until then, "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; None but ourselves can free our minds. Have no fear for atomic energy, 'cause none of them can stop the time. How long shall they kill our prophets, While we stand aside and look Oh! Some say it's just a part of it: We've got to fulfill de book." By Bob Marley - Redemption Song.

Today, “We challenge all to choose the good and not the bad, to "say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ." Titus 2:12, 13

THE SPARK BEHIND THE FIRE

Today we are looking at one of the deepest thinkers of his time. Howard Thurman was born in 1899 and passed away in 1981. He was a scholar whose words inspired Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“He was a shy man who didn’t lead marches or give dramatic speeches. But Howard Thurman was a spiritual genius who transformed history. Thurman was a pastor, professor, and mystic whose groundbreaking book, “Jesus and the Disinherited,” was a condemnation of a form of Christianity which Thurman said was far too often “on the side of the strong and the powerful against the weak and oppressed.”

The book revolutionized the traditional portrait of Jesus and had a profound influence on the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s faith and activism. Born in Florida during the “nadir” of race relations in post-Civil War America, Thurman graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he was a classmate of “Daddy King,” the father of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

His impact on the younger King would be profound. Thurman was the first African American pastor to travel to India and meet Mohandas Gandhi. And he was one of the first pastors to inspire King to merge Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance with the civil rights movement. Thurman’s concepts about nonviolence and Jesus are peppered through King’s writings.

Thurman, though, didn’t fit the image of a fiery, silver-tongued Black preacher. He punctuated his sermons with long silences and enigmatic phrases such as “the sound of the genuine.” Before “interfaith dialogue” became common, Thurman also worshiped with people of other faiths and warned about the dangers of religious fundamentalism.

Thurman’s life was proof that all sorts of people could become influential leaders in the civil rights movement.” By John Blake, CNN.

Today, we need older men and women who can become a spark of fire to our young adults and youth. We need people who can become mentors to those who are trying to become upright in all they do. We need people who can help the young thinking minds, and help to unlock their creativity. We are reminded in Proverbs 1:8-9, “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.”

The book of Proverbs is all about helping us to make right choices, to choose the way of God and not that of the deceiver. The father or the mother, speaking to their son, and daughter, not only warns them against wrong choices but encourages them to make the right ones. This is so important because the choices we make are literally matters of life and death.

The first three chapters of Proverbs illustrate this method of education. After having explained the purpose of the book: to know wisdom (Proverbs 1:2), and having laid down the motto of the book: the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7, compare Proverbs 9:10), the author moves back and forth from warning us against listening to foolishness, to urging us to respond to the call of heavenly wisdom from God, and god-fearing people.

Today let us encourage our youth and young adults to seek the best in life. This can only be done by first seeking God in all things. As it is said, “The more closely God's Word is searched, and the better understood, the more vividly will the student realize that there is, beyond, infinite wisdom, knowledge, and power...

If the youth will but learn of the heavenly Teacher, as did Daniel, they will know that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom... Those who consecrate themselves to God, and who have the protection of His grace and the quickening influence of His Spirit, will manifest keener intellectual power than the mere worldling. They will be able to reach the highest, noblest exercise of every faculty. May God help us become the spark behind the fire in someone's life today. Have a great day. Blessings, Blessings, Blessings.

COME CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY AND EDUCATION MONTH WITH ME. Part 1. WHAT A STORY INDEED!

Dear family, friends, and colleagues. February is known as BLACK HISTORY AND EDUCATION MONTH. While some will not take a moment this month to thank God for persons of color who made a difference in their country and the world. We at GARDEN MINISTRY will dedicate our devotionals this month to the memory of these great trailblazers.

While the newly formed Trump administration has ramped up arrests of undocumented migrants in major cities around the US, and detaining thousands of people. Let us never forget how America became America today.

It was through immigration leaving the European countries to come to America. They, fleeing crop failure, land and job shortages, rising taxes, and famine, many came to the U. S. because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunity.

Until the 19h century, power and hunger were common in Europe. Cities were crowded and deadly diseases were widespread. Religious conflicts were common and religious dissenters were persecuted. Today, I am so glad that the Native Indians of America did not kick the immigrants out of their country when they arrived. Through the spirit of sharing and seeking to help one another, they helped them.

"If Indians were the only native people in America, why do most Americans feel it's ok or support keeping immigrants out? When it seems that unless you're Native American you or your ancestors were also immigrants.

On December 15th, the 224th anniversary of the Bill of Rights ratification, President Obama attended a Naturalization Ceremony held within National Archives. During which he gave a brief speech on America’s history as a nation born of immigrants.

I believe this passage addresses your question rather well.

“We celebrate this history, this heritage, as an immigrant nation. And we are strong enough to acknowledge, as painful as it may be, that we haven’t always lived up to our own ideals. We haven’t always lived up to these documents. From the start, Africans were brought here in chains against their will, and then toiled under the whip. They also built America. A century ago, New York City shops displayed those signs, “No Irish Need Apply.” Catholics were targeted, their loyalty questioned -- so much so that as recently as the 1950s and ‘60s, when JFK had to run, he had to convince people that his allegiance wasn’t primarily to the Pope.

Chinese immigrants faced persecution and vicious stereotypes, and were, for a time, even banned from entering America. During World War II, German and Italian residents were detained, and in one of the darkest chapters in our history, Japanese immigrants and even Japanese American citizens were forced from their homes and imprisoned in camps. We succumbed to fear. We betrayed not only our fellow Americans, but our deepest values. We betrayed these documents. It’s happened before. And the biggest irony of course was -- is that those who betrayed these values were themselves the children of immigrants. How quickly we forget. One generation passes, two generation passes, and suddenly we don’t remember where we came from. And we suggest that somehow there is “us” and there is “them,” not remembering we used to be “them.”

We are, as the former President observes, not always better than our history. We forget, we grow fearful, we draw back and shake our hands in anger. Time and time again, we give way to demagoguery and fear mongering, create a gulf between ourselves and that which would be us.

After all, we are only humans.

But day by day, year by year, decade by decade, we can grow. Slowly, unevenly and with plenty of setbacks, but we have proven it time and time again. Fear will not prevail forever and that which we gain by embracing hope in its stead will shine through.

“Tonight is a particular honor for me because - let's face it - my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely. My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya. He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin-roof shack. His father - my grandfather - was a cook, a domestic servant to the British.

But my grandfather had larger dreams for his son. Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place, America, that shone as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before.

While studying here, my father met my mother. She was born in a town on the other side of the world, in Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs and farms through most of the Depression. The day after Pearl Harbor my grandfather signed up for duty; joined Patton's army, marched across Europe. Back home, my grandmother raised their baby and went to work on a bomber assembly line. After the war, they studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through FHA, and later moved west all the way to Hawaii in search of opportunity.

And they, too, had big dreams for their daughter. A common dream, born of two continents.

My parents shared not only an improbable love, they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation. They would give me an African name, Barack, or "blessed," believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success. They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren't rich, because in a generous America you don't have to be rich to achieve your potential.

They are both passed away now. And yet, I know that, on this night, they look down on me with great pride.

I stand here today, grateful for the diversity of my heritage, aware that my parents' dreams live on in my two precious daughters. I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible.”

Today we celebrate Alberto Gonzales. Alberto Gonzales became the first Hispanic U.S. Attorney General. Gonzales was born in San Antonio, Texas and raised in Houston. Gonzales was born on August 4, 1955 and became a American lawyer, judge, and was appointed Attorney General of the United States (2005–07), the first Hispanic to occupy the post.

Gonzales, is the son of Mexican migrant workers who spoke little English. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force (1973) and then studied at the U.S. Air Force Academy (1975–77). He received a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1979 from Rice University and then attended Harvard University, where he earned a law degree in 1982. That year he joined a private law firm in Houston, where he practiced business law for 13 years.

It is time to heal racial prejudice if we are going to make heaven our home.

"Walls of separation have been built up between the whites and the blacks. These walls of prejudice will tumble down of themselves, as did the walls of Jericho, when Christians obey the Word of God, which enjoins on them supreme love to their Maker and impartial love to their neighbors. . . Let every church whose members claim to believe the truth for this time, look at this neglected, downtrodden race, that as a result of slavery have been deprived of the privilege of thinking and acting for themselves."

If we are going to make it in this world, restitution is needed.

"The law of God contained in the Ten Commandments reveals to man his duty to love God supremely and his neighbor as himself. The American nation owes a debt of love to the colored race, and God has ordained that they should make restitution for the wrong they have done them in the past. Those who have taken no active part in enforcing slavery upon the colored people are not relieved from the responsibility of making special efforts to remove, as far as possible, the sure result of their enslavement." (The Southern Work, 54)

The Greatest Commandment

Deuteronomy 6:1–19; Matthew 22:35-40; Mark 12:28–34.

34 And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together. 35. One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question: 36. “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?”

37Jesus declared, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38. This is the first and greatest commandment. 39. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Finally, let us all learn a lesson from the quotation of the late Bob Marley, "You will never find justice in a world where CRIMINALS make the law." May we learn how to love one another, even as God loves us. Have a wonderful day. Blessings, Blessings, Blessings
