Our Devotional

            To our many readers of Garden Ministry, I want to wish you and
your families Seasons Greetings on behalf of our G.M team and our
families. For the last few weeks we all have seen the blessings of the
Lord, to this we say thank you, One of our team members has gotten
married after he has picked up himself some time now after the death
of his wife, and is now enjoying his new life, to this we say thank you,
Praise the LORD, HALLELUJAH. To others we have seen the hand
of the Lord in bringing our sons and daughters back home to our
families, to this we say thank you.
  
            With so many people loosing their jobs, or being put on a shorter
week schedule, today we can still praise God for sending help their way.
It is clear as the song writer said, “No man is an island, no man stands
alone. Each man's joy is joy to me. Each man's grief is my own.
We need one another, so I will defend. Each man as my brother,
Each man as my friend.
  

We don’t know what tomorrow may bring, but thank God he holds the future. Lastly, I am so thankful to be able to sit down again and be able to write a word from the Lord for us all. Today we will start a new series called, “Second Chance”.

When most people look at the biography of Nelson Mandela of South Africa, they see a man that was locked up for over twenty-five years who became President of the country. Little do we talk about why he was locked up! He wasn't a terrorist...he was wrongly convicted and jailed. But God through His providence gave him a second chance to live out his purpose in life.

What about Bill Clinton? Everyone was ready to throw him out of office when he was President of the United States. Why? Because of the Monica Lewinsky thing, and shame he brought on the country and his family. But did they throw him out? They didn't, and he went on to be a rather good President, all because of a second chance.

Second chances are a good thing, even if most people disagree. Second chances are good for everyone. For the next few days we shall unfold the pages of God’s word on this subject. As we look at building up in us a love for the God of a second, third, fourth, and sometimes seventh chance.

In Isaiah 1:18, God is seen inviting men to meet with /him for a free and frank discussion of their many problems. He is not an inconsiderate judge or an arbitrary tyrant, but a kindly father and friend. God goes on in giving a promise to those who have sinned. "Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.”

How many people you know offers comfort and hope to the worst of men? Only God and those who allow Him to dwell in them! It doesn’t matter how guilty you may have been in your past, how-ever deep down you may be right now, it is possible to be restored to purity and holiness. Sin can be eradicated and completely put out of your life, and the life of those you work with. With the help of God the sinner may secure complete mastery over their besetments, 1 John 1:9.

Finally in the words of Hoy Miller, age 60, of Maryland, in the USA. She said, "I thank God for revealing Himself to me, that I may know that He is real. And that I might realize that He is holy and that I was a sinner needing to be saved. I thank him for so many things, but most of all for His love and salvation to me." May someone find comfort and strength to press on through her testimony.

Today we look at the widespread abuse on children. We can all agree that there is no one answer to the subject of abuse. With new persons showing up at police stations across the world claiming to have been abused by a family member, friend, daycare provider, or someone from the church. It makes you wonder how much more can the mind take and Jesus not come! If I was ever asked to classify the age in which we live, I would have to say it is an age of reviling. “All that is in the dark shall be reviled,” are a true statement for our day. If children think that they were treated with severity and abuse in their childhood, will it help them to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Christ, will it make them reflect His image, to cherish a spirit of retaliation and revenge against the person who abused them, especially when they are old and feeble?

On the other hand, how can people professing the name of Jesus do things in the dark to harm children? Secondly how can a person professing the name of Christ cherish hatred against their abuser? Although it is hard to love the unlovable and those who have caused the greatest harm to us, by God’s grace we must still forgive. The Bible states, “All who love life, let kindness, love, and forgiveness be the sweetest fruits of your life.”

Let me say that God can not and will not condone evil against anyone. In the past, present or future, if you are someone who has cause harm to a child by abuse seek help for yourself and confess your sins to God. If you are called to answer to the court, seek God’s forgiving and work with the law.

What about the victim, because healing must be administered to all parties. The victim must also seek help and also report the offence to the law. If you are called to stand before a court to give evidence to the crime against you, only give the facts. Never turn in hatred upon the one or persons who had abuse you, “Be Patient with Infirmities the Bible teaches! Tender words which will not irritate the spirit should be spoken,” Proverbs 15:1 / Proverbs 25:15.

A true Christian will never be unkind, never under any circumstances be neglectful to those who are abusive of them. Like Jesus, they will bear a pleasant testimony, kind words, helpfulness, and forgiveness, Isaiah 50:4-7. What about the families and friends of those who have been abuse? Always remember, God did not call you to be the judge, jury, and the final say of the law. Work with the law of the land. Child abuse is a difficult thing to deal with, but always remember with God’s help and a godly support you can go on with your life and be productive.

Paul, through our text today brings out the important of forgiveness, which is the KEY TO THE LIBERATION OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN ABUSED BY SOMEONE. He says, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” The question today is how many times must one forgive someone who has violated them?

Peter asked, “Is seven times enough”? Jesus puts a spin to His answer by saying, “It’s not the number of times that’s important, but your attitude. If your attitude is right, you’ll be willing to forgive seventy times seven if you have too, Matthew 18:21-22.

Finally, the Bible teaches that if someone does something wrong that hurts you, you should tell them so. If they are sorry and stops, forgive them. Evan if they do it seven times in one day, Luke 17:3-4.

Forgiveness is not a natural make up of the human race, because we are born with a desire to hate and hurt those that do us wrong. But by God’s grace you can be an overcome and have a heart that forgives, Colossians 3:12-17.

Our title of our devotional is a weighty one today. But first let me say, for the last nine or so weeks I have received email asking where is Garden Ministry. I have been involved in different ministries in Bermuda and the Dominican Republic with “Team Bermuda” in that I did not have the time to write the words from the Lord for His people. If you did not know, every time you receive a devotional, that same morning God has given me the message to write. It truly is a lot of work, so don’t stop praying for this ministry.



Our Devotional

“It was the cross, that instrument of shame and torture, which brought hope and salvation to the world. The disciples were but humble men, without wealth, and with no weapon but the word of God; yet in Christ’s' strength they went forth to tell the wonderful story of the manger and the cross, and to triumph over all opposition.

Without earthly honor or recognition, they were heroes of faith. From their lips came words of divine eloquence that shook the world. In Jerusalem, where the deepest prejudice existed, and where the most confused ideas prevailed in regard to Him who had been crucified as a malefactor, the disciples continued to speak with boldness the words of life, setting before the Jews the work and mission of Christ, His crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension.

Priests and rulers heard with amazement the clear, bold testimony of the apostles. The power of the risen Saviour had indeed fallen on the disciples, and their work was accompanied by signs and miracles that daily increased the number of believers.” {AA 77/ 78}

In the words of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “there comes a time when people get tired of being trampled by the iron feet of oppression ... If we are wrong, the Supreme Court of this nation is wrong. If we are wrong, the Constitution of the United States is wrong. And if we are wrong, God Almighty is wrong. If we are wrong, Jesus of Nazareth was merely a utopian dreamer that never came down to Earth. If we are wrong, justice is a lie, love has no meaning and we are determined here in Montgomery to work and fight until "justice runs down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream." Amos 5:24



In other words, he goes on to say “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” In the days of the disciples, it wasn’t an easy thing to stand up for truth and right. In fact, if you showed a leader of government, or the church, that they were leading by the power of unrighteousness, or taken advantage of the people through their laws or traditions they would black-ball you.



But this did not stop the disciples from preaching and teaching the gospel. Neither should it stop us, who are living in these last days. Today we pause to pay our respect to the hundreds of migrants from many countries who are suffering through widespread abuse in every kind. These migrants that are looking for a better life, in the countries of their pilgrimage, for themselves and their families, are encouraged to sign up for jobs that sometimes don’t even exist. Some have taken on jobs which they are under paid, and some are not paid at all.



Today we take time to stand beside organizations around the world for the prevention of abuse in all its forms. In this age of 'human rights crisis' it is time for us all to take a stand against the abuse that is plaguing migrants. It is said, “Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they can not communicate; they can not communicate because they are separated.”

If there was ever a time to be our brothers keeper, it is now! It doesn’t matter were you come from; we are indebted to one another. Country-man or immigrants, migrants, or permanent residents, “If there was ever a time to be our brothers keeper, it is now!”

This is no time for passive thinkers, but open minded, peaceful, but action thinking people. This is the time which calls for us to take a position like the disciples, that is neither safe on our part, politically, nor popular. We must stand for others because Conscience tells you it is right. We must stand for others, and help them fight for their right. May God bless you as you take your stand today, in Jesus name, and point all to Jesus, the great equalizer and Saviour!

In the words of Paul Boose, he said, “forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.” What a statement! Today we hope to answer the question of how to help someone who has been abused. This series on abuse is not concerned with one type of abuse, but all forms of abuse. Some have gone as far as to classify abuse as bad or not so bad. But all abuse, no matter how bad we see it, is out of order, and should not be tolerated, but condemned and stopped.

In some countries certain levels of abuse are acceptable as long as it doesn’t exceed the level of the law, where as in other countries these levels are condemned. The question we should all ask ourselves is who sets the level of the law that governs abuse? The answer to this question is the legislators. In this twenty first century which is considered as the most intelligent age since the Antediluvian man (mankind that lived before the flood).

Why is it, that the United Nations has not put out a standard to govern the level of abuse in our world? Is it because no one wants to rock the boat, but live and work together as long as they stay on their side of the fence, and agree only on there common points? Why is it that some countries that sit on the United Nations Council are allowed to have a voice, when they are a part of the problem that is leading to the acceptance of abuse in other countries and their homes?

When most people look at putting out a fire, they start at the place of entry. Now that’s good, but if a high wind comes, before long that fire will get out of control. Any good firefighter knows that if you are fighting a fire, you must try to stop it on all fronts. But the mean place of stopping a fire is at the heart.

Once you have taken the strength of the fire away, then everything there after is controllable. Today there is a fire of abuse that is raging across the world, and specialist and others with expertise are trying to put it out. These good Samaritans of our day are fighting at the place of entry, but who would dare step up and work on the heart of the problem? Who would call upon God to help us in Jesus name, to send someone to the United Nations Council to speak to the heart?

In the days of Jesus, the houses in the east where generally made flat-roofed, that the inhabitants may have the benefit of taking the air on them; they were also furnished with battlements round about, Deuteronomy 22:8 / Judges 16:27 / 2 Samuel 11:2. To prevent persons from falling off; and have a trap door by which they descend into the house. This door, it appears, was too narrow to let down the sick man and his couch who came seeking help from Jesus; so they uncovered the roof, removed a part of the tiles; and having broken it up, taken away the lathes or timber, to which the tiles had been attached, they, (his four friends) then had room to let down the afflicted man, Luke 5:19 / Matthew 10:27 / Matthew 24:17.

There may be someone whom you know today that needs your help that is abused. It may take more than one person to help them. Just look around for a moment and see who can help with that abused person. It may be a self inflicted abuse; it may be someone taking advantage of the weakness of someone. The signs may not be so evident, but they are there. In what way can you help or find others to help you find treatment for those who are abused and seeking help? Our text today helps us see that it is high time to uncover the roof that is preventing someone from getting to Jesus and finding help.

It is time for every country, including the United Nations Council to come into line with Gods' standard for abuse, and the respect of all men. Lastly, the greatest care you can provide someone who has been abused, or is still being abused, is to be a friend, a good listener, and let them down to the agents of mercy. May God help us all to this end today!

We have come to the last command of the Royal Law given by God to all who love Him, and long to eat of the tree of life, Revelation 22:14. You shall not covet is widely understood as moral imperatives by legal scholars, Jewish scholars, Catholic scholars, and Post-Reformation scholars. Unlike the other nine commandments which focus on outward actions, this command focuses on the inner heart, the motive that gives birth to our deeds.

It is an imperative against setting one’s desire on things that are forbidden. For instance, the seventh commandment forbids the act of adultery, but this commandment forbids the desire for adultery. The eighth commandment forbids the act of stealing, but covetousness forbids the desire for unjust acquisition of another man’s goods or person.

Simply put, covetousness implies a desire to possess an object by unjust or unlawful means. The Bible is not however implying that if we have a desire to obtain something lawful, it is sin, 1 Corinthians 12:31. On the contrary, it is only sinful when we desire something that is not legitimately attainable. Although this command can be committed without the knowledge of others, it is the most heart searching of all commands of the Royal Law.

The Hebrew word translated “covet” is “chamad” which can be translated into English as “covet”, “lust”, and “strong desire.” Finally remember, the tenth commandment helps us see that even though our evil desires never reach the stage of conduct, they are sinful in the sight of God, and need always to be under the control of His spirit. Take my advice, “Don’t take for granted the sin of covetousness, because it is the fountain from which flows the poison of idolatry, hypocrisy, Sabbath desecration and false worship.

Through the sin of the tenth commandment, disobedience to parents is a common scene these days, and murder is like a game to those who commit it. With the high rate of divorcement through adultery, and the uncontrollable rate of acceptable fornication, stealing, and lying. The sin of covetousness stands at the root of all these sin, so let’s keep our eyes in our own cup today!

Lastly, the Bible say’s when “all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.” May we find time today to reread the Ten Commandments and stand off and reflect on, “THE BLUEPRINT” and standard of the judgment!
