I KNOW WHAT’S IN MY CUP

Quote of the day

“Covetousness feeds on selfishness, [but] it cannot exist where love rules and abounds.”

By T. G. Bunch

This is the 286th letter:

Text for the day: Exodus 20: 17

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

Our Theme for the day: “THE BLUEPRINT” Part 18 (I KNOW WHAT’S IN MY CUP)

Our Devotional

We have come to the last command of the Royal Law given by God to all who love Him, and long to eat of the tree of life, Revelation 22:14. You shall not covet is widely understood as moral imperatives by legal scholars, Jewish scholars, Catholic scholars, and Post-Reformation scholars. Unlike the other nine commandments which focus on outward actions, this command focuses on the inner heart, the motive that gives birth to our deeds.

It is an imperative against setting one’s desire on things that are forbidden. For instance, the seventh commandment forbids the act of adultery, but this commandment forbids the desire for adultery. The eighth commandment forbids the act of stealing, but covetousness forbids the desire for unjust acquisition of another man’s goods or person.

Simply put, covetousness implies a desire to possess an object by unjust or unlawful means. The Bible is not however implying that if we have a desire to obtain something lawful, it is sin, 1 Corinthians 12:31. On the contrary, it is only sinful when we desire something that is not legitimately attainable. Although this command can be committed without the knowledge of others, it is the most heart searching of all commands of the Royal Law.

The Hebrew word translated “covet” is “chamad” which can be translated into English as “covet”, “lust”, and “strong desire.” Finally remember, the tenth commandment helps us see that even though our evil desires never reach the stage of conduct, they are sinful in the sight of God, and need always to be under the control of His spirit. Take my advice, “Don’t take for granted the sin of covetousness, because it is the fountain from which flows the poison of idolatry, hypocrisy, Sabbath desecration and false worship.

Through the sin of the tenth commandment, disobedience to parents is a common scene these days, and murder is like a game to those who commit it. With the high rate of divorcement through adultery, and the uncontrollable rate of acceptable fornication, stealing, and lying. The sin of covetousness stands at the root of all these sin, so let’s keep our eyes in our own cup today!

Lastly, the Bible say’s when “all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.” May we find time today to reread the Ten Commandments and stand off and reflect on, “THE BLUEPRINT” and standard of the judgment!

LET'S BE HONEST

“Honesty is a direct reflection of your inner character. Your actions are a reflection on your faith, and reflecting the truth in your actions is a part of being a good witness. Learning how to be more honest will also help you keep a clear conscious.”

By Kelli Mahoney

This is the 285th letter:

Text for the day: Exodus 20:16

“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”

Our Theme for the day: “THE BLUEPRINT” Part 17 (LET'S BE HONEST)

Our Devotional

You may have heard it told by your mother or some old person, honesty is the best policy. To form right notions of things, and to possess our mind with clear and distinct ideas, that we may know both how to speak and act wisely is the beginning of honesty. To distinguish between speaking the truth or falsehood, living a life of goodness or evil is also another form of honesty.

In short what is honesty and why is it so important? Honesty is telling the truth to everyone, straightforward conduct, being sincere, truthful, trustworthy, honorable, fair, genuine, and loyal with integrity. Some say, this is what most people in the world are missing. On the other hand, is it amazing how so many misunderstand the importance of being honest? This leads us to dishonesty, which can be defined simply as a behavior that is performed by someone with intent to deceive or to manipulate the truth.

Speaking of Satan the Bible says he is a liar and the truth is not in him, John 8:44. “His career of falsehood began in heaven, where he first misrepresented the character and purposes of God before the angels. By his insinuations and lies in the Garden of Eden he brought about the fall of our first parents, Genesis 3:4. History has shown, from the day of the first fall to our day, Satan has led millions of people away from serving God through lies. Satan is not just a liar, but the father of it. As a liar, Satan was expelled from heaven and will never regain residence there; neither will his children,” Revelation 22:15. BC vol. 5 Page 992

“There are a great number of opinions about honesty. Even in moral systems which approve in general of honesty over dishonesty, [but] some people think there are situations in which dishonesty may be preferable. Others would not define preferable behaviors as dishonest by reasoning that they are not intended to deceive others for personal gain, but the intent is nobler in character, for example sparing people of opinions that will upset them. Rather than dishonesty, that behavior is often viewed as self sacrifice - giving up one's voice for the happiness of others. But it can hardly be a universal approach to either determining honesty or morality.

In many circumstances, withholding one's opinions can legitimately be viewed as cowardice. Then there are those who agree to keep a promise but can’t keep their mouth, and become a betrayer of the trust of those who put their trust in them. If you are discriminated against by someone without a cause, that is sin. If you are unfairly judged by someone due to false information or beliefs left unchallenged, this is also sinful. For this reason, many people insist that an objective approach to the truth, rather than an ideological or idealistic approach, is a necessary component of honesty.

Honesty travels on a larger arc than merely telling the truth. Telling the truth involves answering a question directly without lying or attempting to deceive. Honesty involves answering even the unasked question. For instance an honest person will rarely exhibit surprising behaviour in the lives of others due to having kept others informed of personal opinions. Additionally an honest person will inform others of opportunities for growth and self-actualization.” The free encyclopedia

An honest person will not keep information or even secrets that allow people to be harmed, or deceived of their rights. An honest person will not remain silent when duty calls for them to tell the truth. In short, being honest means living in transparency to God and humanity. “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour” is the word of the Lord.

So what is wrong with a little white lie? Does God over look them? There is no special origin or etymology to the term "little white lie." The word "white" has long been synonymous with "good," "pure," and "intending no harm." For example, “Some believe its ok to tell a "white lie" which is a lie told for a good reason, with no intent to harm any one. They go on to say, “A white lie can be excusable only because it does not cause great harm.”

But God does not approve of this; a lie is a lie, is a lie. Whether a white lie or a black lie, the Bible calls them all lies. The Bible actually has a lot to say about honesty, as God has called Christians to be honest people. Even little white lies to protect someone's feelings can compromise your faith.

As the moral climate of our society deteriorates, lying and deceit will become major problems. The business world, which is plagued by this problem of dishonesty, company theft, promises not kept, contracts broken, etc, is all stealing. Remember, speaking and living the truth, will help those around you come to the Truth. Let us propose to speak the truth even if your voice shakes, then to speak a bold face lie and end up in hell as your shame. For without the Holy City are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie, Revelation 22:11-15.

Don’t Take It! Part 2

Quote of the day

"The days of our spending like drunken sailors will come to an end, and in American households, already have. We are moving to smaller, more thoughtful consumption -- sustainable consumption."

By Bruce Tomaso

This is the 284th letter:

Text for the day: Exodus 20:15

“Thou shalt not steal.”

Our Theme for the day: “THE BLUEPRINT” Part 16 (Don’t Take It! Part 2)

Our Devotional

Our text for the morning is the same as yesterday, “Thou shalt not steal.” Today let us look at different forms of violations under the eighth commandment in a more practical way. With the latest crime statistics around the world being updated, theft remains one of the main reasons people stand before a court.

The increase in theft has caused some countries to take a whole new look at the punishment for those who commit such an offense. In America alone, according to the NASP “THE NATIONAL LEARNING & RESOURCE CENTER”, say that, “More than $13 billion worth of goods are stolen from retailers each year. That's more than $35 million per day. There are approximately 27 million shoplifters (or 1 in 11 people) in our nation today.

More than 10 million people have been caught shoplifting in the last five years. Shoplifting affects more than the offender. It overburdens the police and the courts, adds to a store's security expenses, costs consumers more for goods, costs communities lost dollars in sales taxes and hurts children and families. Then we have embezzlement, which is a breach of trust, these people are like bankers, treasurers, and even church members who have been made stewards over God’s tithes and offerings.

What about gambling, is this a form of stealing? Yes! Through games of chance such as betting, lotteries, pools, and bingo, those who play them are trying to get something for nothing, and this is stealing. Then we have extortion. Did you know the Bible forbids this sin, Leviticus 25:14 / Jeremiah 17:11 / Ezekiel 22:12 / Matthew 23:25 / 1 Corinthians 6:10? Sad to say in these economic hard times stores, insurances, hospitals, and companies, are driving there price up in order to get a sharp bargain for their product, because circumstances place the buyer at the mercy of the seller. This is the greatest sin by extortion, obtaining money under false pretenses.

Lastly, God is not pleased when we hold the payment of the laborer if he has finished the work, Leviticus 19:13 / Deuteronomy 24:14-15 / Jeremiah 22:13 / James 5:4. The eighth commandment demands economic diligence, carefulness in your money dealings, and industry, Proverbs 24:30-34 / 2 Thessalonians 3:10.

To most people, we don’t always think about it, but Identity theft is a no, no. This form of fraud or cheating of another person's identity in which someone pretends to be someone else by assuming that person's identity, typically in order to access resources or obtain credit and other benefits in that person's name. Richard Power of the Carnegie Mellon Cylab with data supplied by All Clear ID, found that of 40,000 children 10.2% were victims of identity theft.

But the number one thief is not the one take takes what’s in your house or business, but the one who talks behind your back. These are thieves of reputation. If you are a gossipers and slanders of people’s good name, or reputation, then you are a robber and apart of the most damaging forms of thievery, this is forbidden under the eighth commandment. If you need help, there is hope for you if you need to overcome seek help from a spiritual advisor. Today you can be like Zacchaeus and say, “If I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much," Luke 19:1-10 / Ezekiel 33:15-16. This is the law of restitution.

Don’t Take It! Part 1

Half of our mistakes in life arises from feeling where we ought to think, and thinking where we ought to feel.” John Churton Collins

This is the 283rd letter:

Text for the day: Exodus 20:15

“Thou shalt not steal.”

Our Theme for the day: “THE BLUEPRINT” Part 15 (Don’t Take It!)

Our Devotional

As I was driving down the road the other day, I saw a sign on the back of a car in front on me which read, “Don’t steal, the government don’t like competition!” When the car drove of on a side road, I got to thinking about those words.

What is the definition for stealing? Stealing is the taking of things or being in possession of things that belong to someone else without their permission. Did you know that stealing is one of the mean reasons why so many people are behind bars today? The Center for effective Parenting says that, “stealing is a common behavior in young children. Almost all children take things that don't belong to them at one time or another.

Stealing, however, is a behavior that can be quite upsetting to parents. Many parents who have caught their children stealing worry that their children are on the road to becoming hardened criminals. These parents should be relieved to know that the vast majority of children who occasionally steal grow up to be law abiding citizens. While stealing is often considered a normal or common behavior in young children, it must still be addressed and corrected if you are going to enter Heaven.

“Parents should discuss this with their children to make sure that they know why stealing is wrong. Parents can point out that stealing means taking something that rightfully belongs to someone else”…… “It might also be a good idea for parents to require that the child apologize to the person from whom the item was stolen. Sometimes this is very difficult for children, so parents may not want to force the issue if their child is unable to make an apology. It is, however, very important that the child go along on the trip to make the return. It is very important that the child assume responsibility for correcting the misbehavior.”

“To steal” in the Hebrew word is “ganab” and the Greek word is “klepto” and means “to take or make use of without right or authority, usually with the intent to keep”. From the Gk. word “klepto”, we get the English word “kleptomania”, meaning “to have a persistent impulse to steal”. Have you ever told other people that it was wrong to steal, but then you were doing so (stealing) yourself? Have you ever thought that it was wrong to rob a bank, but that it was alright to do any of the following?

1. · Taking/eating food from where you work, when you are not supposed to?

2. · Borrowing money, tools, books, videos, CDs, etc; from someone and then not returning or repaying what you borrowed?

3. · copying copyrighted material unlawfully (e.g., music, videos, books, etc.)?

4. · Taking supplies/materials from where you work (e.g., pens, pencils, etc.) or doing your work on your job time?

5. · Sampling food at the grocery store (e.g., fruit, candy, etc.) without paying for it?

6. · Taking longer breaks or quitting earlier at work than you should and being paid for your full time?

7. · Seeing someone drop or leave something (e.g., money, wallet, purse, a material item) and then picking it up and keeping it rather than telling the person he/she dropped or left the item?

8. · Taking from the rich to give to the poor?

9. · Taking from the poor to get richer?

10. · What about stealing Gods tithes, Malachi 3: 6-12

“Why do most people think it was wrong to rob a bank but not wrong to rob in any of the above ways? Can you think of any other ways that people steal without thinking that they are actually stealing? Now that you’ve been made aware of these often overlooked ways of stealing, will you rationalize, justify, or excuse stealing in these ways any longer? It would do well for us to relook at this devotion, because stealing is a subject well worth our attention for two reasons. Firstly, stealing has become a problem of epidemic proportions around the world. Secondly, consider the impact of “stealing” has on our economy. “If you're content with what God has given, how can you become a thief? Keep your heart free from wanting other people's possessions by resting in God's provision, and you won't be tempted to steal.” By Carey Kinsolving

Lastly, one of the reasons for the killing in the streets is because of stealing. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and "blood toucheth blood." Hosea 4:1-3.

Further reading on stealing:

Ephesians 4:28, “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.”

Leviticus 19:11, Exodus 22:7, Proverbs 10:2, “Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death.”

Romans 13:9, “For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Jeremiah 7:9-11, “Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!” You have become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the Lord.”

1 Corinthians 6:9-11, “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God ? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God . And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

Luke 19:8, Psalm 62:10, Leviticus 6:1-6,

1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”

Zechariah 5:1-4, Matthew 7:7.

In John 10:10 the Bible calls Satan a thief, whose intent is to only steal, kill, and destroy. But Jesus came to give us life, may we accept life today, and let's be honest. John 3:16-21.

Colleagues have today paid tribute to the dedication and professionalism of the 66-year-old woman “who never stopped living her career”. They spoke out as they struggle to come to terms with how someone who dedicated her entire life to others could have her own life taken away in such tragic circumstances. Ms James has been described as a big-hearted woman who will be remembered and respected for her work. Even though she didn’t have any of her own children, she is said to have touched the lives of many families by being there when they needed her.

World Events:

Ø We are calling for prayer for the people of Nigerian city of Ibadan where at least 102 people are now thought to have been killed by floods. Floodwater, resulting from heavy rains that began on Friday, damaged three bridges and caused a dam to overflow, submerging buildings across the city. Most of the victims were children. Some victims had been trapped in collapsed buildings. Although flooding is common in Nigeria during the rainy season, meteorologists say this year's rains have been particularly heavy. Last year, about 500,000 people were displaced nationwide. About 2,000 residents have so far been displaced.

Today is a great day to praise the LORD for the things He is doing around the world through all Ministries. Although the work of spreading the gospel in different countries is moving ahead by human hands, it is not advancing as it should advance, yet, that which has been accomplished affords reason for gratitude and grounds for encouragement. To add to this great work of finishing the work of God is this ministry (Garden Ministry). We need your help; more and more people are seeking for Garden Ministry to be translated into their language. If you would like to translate this devotional and send it off to your friends in different parts of the world, please do so. You have our blessing.

Welcome to Garden Ministry,
