Text for the day: 2 Corinthians 7:1
Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Our Devotional
The story is told of an old man in this town who was brought before there police court, charged with stealing a loaf of bread. The morning was bitter cold, as Mr. Flower looked for food. As he walked in the bakery he said, his hunger got the best of his judgment so he took the bread. As the old man walked trembling before the judge, charged with stealing a loaf of bread. The judge asked him why did you do the crime. My family, he said, "was starving," was Mr. Flower’s only reply. As the judge looked at him he said, 'I've got to punish you,' 'The law makes no exception. I can do nothing but sentence you to a fine of ten dollars.' But as the old man stood there, the judge was moved, and reach into his pocket, and gave a ten dollar bill to Mr. Flowers. Then the most unusual thing happen, the judge said; now I remit the fine, “But 'I'm going to fine everybody in this courtroom fifty cents for living in a town where a man has to steal bread for his family in order for them to eat.”
The Bible says, "Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne." (Psalm 89:14) In that court room that day, old Mr. Flower’s saw justice and judgment, but he also experience mercy. The Bible tells us that there is coming a day when mercy shall be no more. (Revelation 22:11-15) On that day justice and judgment will be alone, and all of Adam decedents will stand before the court room of God without mercy. On that day a wicked and adulterous people will not escape the wrath of God and the punishment they have justly earned. On that day those who refuse to walk in the light of God’s love, will receive their just reward of death, but those who walked in the light of God’s love will receive their just reward of life everlasting.
Today this judgment hour massage is being sounded are resounded around the world. (Revelation 14:6-12) Hundreds of people are coming to the Lord from every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people. These people are taking advantage of this day, which is the day of God’s mercy and grace. They have decided to be patterns of piety, holy in heart, and conversation. In these last days, God is longing for people to join in and give the warning, correction, and reproof to a world that is bent on sin. Who would join with the Holy Spirit, and give the call to the erring, that there is hope for you of a better day. Warren Wiersbe, recounted the following experience as an example of the trivialization of holiness said, “Happiness, not holiness, is the chief pursuit of most people today, including many professed Christians.” But this is not the day to point fingers, but give a helping hand. This is the day of great light, which illuminates all men. (Revelation 18:1)
In closing this series, I share these final words that mean so much to me. “None are so low, and corrupt, and vile, but that they can find in Jesus, who died for them, strength, purity, and righteousness, if they will put away their sins, stop their course of iniquity, and turn with full purpose of heart to the living God. He is waiting to strip them of their garments, stained and polluted by sin, and to put upon them the white, bright robes of righteousness; and he bids them live and not die. In him they may flourish. Their branches will not wither nor be fruitless. (Psalms 1:3) If they abide in him, they can draw sap and nourishment from him, be imbued with his Spirit, and walk even as he has walked, overcome as he has overcome, and be exalted to his own right hand.” (RH, 1886 par. 9) THEREFORE, SINCE these [great] promises are ours, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates and defiles body and spirit, and bring [our] consecration to completeness in the [reverential] fear of God. (2 Corinthians 7:1 Amplified Version) Thank you Lord.
