Text for the day: Genesis 4:8 (New International V ersion, 2010)
Now
Our Theme for the day: “Am I my brother's keeper?” (Part 5 Let's go out to the field)
Our Devotional
When was the last time you went out and sat down in the open field? Now I am aware that we are still in winter in some places around the world. B ut to those areas around the world where the grass in green and the trees are blooming or just coming to themselves. When was the last time you stepped into the beauty of the Lord? I can testify when my wife and I go out to the beach and sit on the high rocks and talk of God’s goodness around us it is like heaven here on earth. B ut when we steal away in the open fields and take out time for each other and watch nature at its best, it’s like being in the very throne room of God.
In Genesis 4:8 according to the New K ing James V ersion of the B ible it says, “Now C ain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that C ain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. Some have asked questions like, “Why did Abel go with C ain to the field anyway? Or did he not know that his brother was angry with him? To answer these and other questions we must look at the text closely. When you read the first part of the text you see that Abel saw nothing wrong with going for a walk with his brother. After all this was not their first walk together in the open field.
This first murder on planet earth, C ain killing his brother Abel, would have great adversities on mankind. As news got back to Adam and Eve they where broken up. They could not contain the weight of the lost. This would be a great blow to the human family, and a lost that God Himself would feel. How many of us think about the consequences of our actions, and how it affects not only you but others?
According to the B ible God condemns hatred, because it leads to murder.
Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. (1 John 3:15)
He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
B etter is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. (Proverbs 15:17)
Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:17-18)
Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins. (Proverbs 10:12 “The K ing James V ersion”)
Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs. (The New International V ersion, 2010)
Hatred starts fights, but love pulls a quilt over the bickering. (The M essage)
Hatred stirs up contentions, but love covers all transgressions. The Amplified B ible)
To the many they will never openly kill anyone, but we must all watch our words, because they can kill. “We should choose our words with care, honoring the gift of speech. Words matter. Whether spoken, written or, nowadays, typed into a computer, words have the power to transform lives — sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse…… God put our tongues behind a cage of teeth and a wall of cheek. Tongues create words, and words can be very dangerous. Words can also accomplish good things, of course. We all know how a simple "thank you," a greeting, or some other kind word can transform an otherwise dark day into a joyful one. In short, words play a huge role in determining our character.” The Seattle Times published Friday, January 28, 2011
