Proverbs 16:18
Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Our Theme for the day: “The true Watchers and Prayers” (Part 3)

“Foolish Pride”

Our Devotional

There are two words in the English language which most people get mixed up on, proud and pride. What is the meaning of these two words? To be proud of something means feeling self-respect or pleasure in something by which you measure your self-worth. It also means having or showing a proper pride in oneself, one's position, one's family, etc. But to have pride is to be disdainful in your behavior or treatment; insolence or have arrogance of demeanor; Being haughty in your bearing of others; having self-gratulation, and self pride. The Bible strongly reproves pride. Let us not mix up with the pride that cause you to have self esteem, which cause you to believe that you can do what ever you put your mind to. Oh no. We ought to watch, lest pride should find a place in our heart. Whenever pride and ambition are indulged, the life is marred, for pride, feeling no need, closes the heart against the infinite blessings of Heaven. He who makes self-glorification his aim will find himself destitute of the grace of God, through whose efficiency the truest riches and the most satisfying joys are won. But he who gives all and does all for Christ will know the fulfillment of the promise, "The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and He added no sorrow with it." Proverbs 10:22.

With the gentle touch of grace the Saviour banishes from the soul unrest and unholy ambition, changing enmity to love and unbelief to confidence. When He speaks to the soul, saying, "Follow Me," the spell of the world's enchantment is broken. At the sound of His voice the spirit of greed and ambition flees from the heart, and men arise, emancipated, to follow Him. The perils of the last days are upon us. Those who live to please and gratify self are really dishonoring the Lord. God cannot work through those who have pride, for they would misrepresent Him before those who are ignorant of the truth. Sometimes it may be necessary for God to remove from you blessings which, instead of improving you in your life and service of Him, you have used for the gratification of selfish pride. Parents should rebuke pride in your children. But to most mothers they frequently set the example of pride to their children, sowing seed that will spring up and bear fruit. The harvest will be plenteous and sure. It is much easier to teach a child a lesson of pride than of humility.

But Gods word is still sure; pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Pride early fostered in the heart will remain there; and nothing but the Holy Spirit can eradicate it. Remember a man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. (Proverbs 29:23)
In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them. (Proverbs 14:3)
The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined. (Psalm 10:2) But God hates pride. "And all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly will be stubble; and the day that cometh will burn them up.

As you can see pride is dangerous because it masquerades itself in many ways to include seemingly spiritual ways. Pride takes the focus off of God and puts it on self and if the Christian falls for it, he or she will even use their church service as a masquerade for their indulging in pride. In the Bible, Satan was the first one to fall into pride and it transformed him from an angel of light to one of darkness. (Ezekiel 28:17)
Today the Lord is saying; “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the forward mouth, do I hate. (Proverbs 8:17) If the motive of all our life is to serve and honor Christ and bless humanity,…. then the dreariest path of duty will become a bright way-- a path cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in.
